I am doing it again... I don't know why I can't stop buying Wranglers and converting them... I think I have a square headlight erradication addiction...

Anyway, Friday night...

Over the next few weeks I will take the CJ tub on the right and take the tailgate, the defrost, etc. and move them over to the black Wrangler tub. The tub was in great shape in comparison to the frame, which was not so much. The good news is that all the parts are up on CL and I am going to "recycle" them... cough $$$$, but basically the 93 YJ was a 4 banger, so the axles are 4.11, so for someone with YJ with a 6 cyl with bigger tires, it is a nice easy swap.

So, stay tuned, I hope to start this coming weekend on all the steps to make a Wranlger tub into a CJ so no one will ever know... well, it all depnds on how far you take it.

And here I am searching all over for a CJ tub to just fix my CJ7 ... and you are tearing up CJ tubs to make YJs look like CJs...

I don't like you so much now...

Although I do appreciate your addiction to reducing the number of those ugly square headlight versions!

I just picked up a YJ and would like to start the same project all I can find on the island is a frame for a CJ5 . The YJ frame is completely shot but the tub and the rest minus the top is in easly reparible condition.
How to would be great. Izzak and I are doing this for a project. Theaching him and learning myself.
As many pictures as you can post would be awsome!!!:notworthy:

This is the 3rd one I am doing fully, and I have helped do a couple simple swaps (just the YJ swap with no mods) and I have a couple write ups, but you have to like to read as I tend to get wordy...

Silver CJ
certifiablejeep.com - Project "Free Jeep" a.k.a Project "FJ" - part #69

Yellow CJ
certifiablejeep.com - Third Project Build-up - part #1

Both had YJ tubs, one was a 89 and one was a 95, so they show the slight differences in the years, not there isn't too much there.

So, take a look and see what you think, it is a mostly HOW TO document.

If you want the cliff notes version, here it is...

Thanks for the links I will take a look when I get home tonight. I might have questions.

As I re-read your post... I have a couple questions.

What front grille are you going to use? A CJ or YJ? Also, fenders, hood, etc.

If you are going to use YJ parts and the YJ tub, it is probably easier to use a YJ frame... but I know you are having issue sourcing one.

I feel your pain, as in the Northeast, we don't ever get frames that are good enough to last and restore... those are all down south and out west.

So,

I think the more frightening part is how many CJ7 bodies I have seen go under the knife and are no longer with us. I myself have hacked up a few for parts and scrapped the rest... and by a few, I mean many, and some of the projects I have worked on people have said that they junked the body long ago and are running Wrangler bodies.

I know they produced a lot of YJ's, but the fact of the matter is that they rust as well, and the oldest YJ's are 22 years old now... New England Winters and YJ's don't equal a good time... the salt will always win!

cb

We deal with the salt up here also live right off the ocean. You don't buy a vehicle here used until you really look it really good. You try to buy one out of Seattle or Portland in the real world!!!

The CJ7 we just acquired is out of Ohio, if the dealers advertisement sticker is to be believed. And I do believe it, just from the huge amount of rust it had. Leading us to cut the tub into pieces. Hopefully a new tub will emerge at the right time!

So you found the elusive rust free (or mostly rust free) tub you were looking for? Looks pretty solid

Those look like stock Yj springs , but if they have 2 1/2 in. of lift to them I know where you could sell them :D.

I love Wranglers I just wish I had the knowledge to convert them myself. I'd love to learn how to convert them. If you have some pictures that would be great. I tend to learn better when I look at pictures. I look forward to hearing more.

Axles, springs and soon to be tires are long gone.
So are a bunch of the parts off the Jeep.

Basically I am using the tub, converting it to have all CJ pieces, and then going to put this on a CJ7 that has a bad CJ tub.

As for the 'Cuda, it is still in the garage, it just didn't get front billing yet. Having someone pay you to do something vs. do something for yourself, well, right now the paying takes precedent.

As for the 'Cuda, with a little one on the way, it will probably end up being done right around the time she is ready to drive. Great, all my hopes and dreams since I was a kid will end going to her... LOL. Nah, I am sure I can get it done before that, I just hope that she doesn't want it Panther Pinik! DISCLAIMER No offense to PP owners...

The YJ springs were stock by the way, that thing was knee high to a grasshopper... the springs were just not sprung, that's all.

I will post more pictures as it comes along, but mainly it is the defrost, the gas hole opening, the tailgate/mounts/supports and if he wants to do the washers for the windows. Then there is a bunch of CJ upgrades that will be done, like the blower motor upgrade, have to open up the firewall a bit for that and then he wants a tranny upgrade, stuff like that, all will end up modifying the body somewhat, the CJ frame somewhat and other misc stuff.

So, stay tuned, I hope to get moving on it this weekend!

I will keep an aye on this one also, just in case I end up with a YJ tub to fit onto the CJ7 frame as well. But hopefully I can find a Cj tub instead!

I am starting to think a clean rust free Jeep is like spotting a Yeti... sure they are out there, but you never really get a good look at one... LOL.

Every night I drill one more bolt out and tap another... it is slow going during he week, but I hope this weekend to transform the tub in to a CJ! Owner is coming over to give a hand. I am hoping at least for the cowl, the gas filler and some other misc things done. I still have the rear seat mounts to drill and tap... DAMN!
