So I was able to finally start my cj after a 10 year build up. I rebuilt the QuadraTrac case with a new Morse chain, and the clutches are perfect. When I put the jeep in gear it feels like something is binding up. Kind of like overcomin an e brake that is engadged. Do the clutches need to be broken in? I don't have vacuum going to the case as of now I wonder if that's the issue. Any help

Were you able to turn the TC shaft before reattaching to the Transmission ? My best guess would be lubrication of the clutch packs or improper installation of them. Rod

That is possible, after all they are metal on metal parts. I would disconnect it and try turning it by hand again. If it won't turn by hand then another teardown is in order. If it turns by hand, you may have a different problem. While disconnected, I would apply a vacuum and make sure everything works. There should be a noticeable difference in locked vs unlocked. Do you have the low range gear reducer? If so make sure that you fill it separately with TC fluid. With the exception of the clutch pack the Quadra-trac TC is really a very simple mechanical device.......not sure what else could go wrong. Keep us informed as to what you find out. Rod

Hello together,
I just got a rolling chassie of a 79 CJ7 QuadraTrac .
GM Turbo 400 is fine, axles are okay, frame so so but the key!! QuadraTrac is missing.
The guy told me it did not come with the "package"
So where do I get a Transfer Case , or are there any options out there for a swap? It is my next 10 year project, so I am not in a hurry. But
even when I get a Transfer Case are there spareparts /aftermarket parts still available. Or is it a risk getting one and then no access to spareparts. By the way, I am from Germany, and spareparts are kind of rare.
Thanks for any information.

Hi,
I am your "neighbour", if you need help concerning parts in german, just drop me a pm.
Parts are not really an issue, but from my point of view try to keep/restore the QT...

One option would be to swap in a Dana 18 Transfer Case to match your offset rear axle (you will need an adapter to mate the 400) . A big plus is off-road wheeling where one diff follows the other. Less chance of getting hung up compared to the center diffs.

Hallo Posi
you started something with your dana18 ...
you can get a Overdrive for a dana 18 they say 0.75:1
Does that mean that I have 0.75 for onroad instead of 1:1 which makes the 3 gear of the th 400 not that bad, so that the engine can idle even on high way speed.

Or do I have the option 0.75:1 all the time even in 4 low?

Thanks a lot
