Half luck/half skill?

I think it was mostly sloppy wiring by a PO. Luckily, it didn't work at all instead of shorting to ground and killing the meter. Bare corroded wire wrapped around the sender post, and grounded to a body mount bolt (I didn't know rubber was a conductor).

I replaced the ground wire and put it under a bolt on the skid plate, and replaced the wire from the sender through the floor to the harness.

I had to drop the tank to fix a leak, so I pulled the pickup/sender assembly to check it. The tank and sender don't look 40+ years old, but the mud collected at one small spot between the tank and skid plate and made a tiny hole. While I had the sender out, I pried off the cover and bent a little more tension on the wiper, figuring it didn't work anyways so I couldn't make it worse.

I put a few gallons in the tank and it didn't register so I thought the meter was dead. This morning I filled up on the way to work and noticed when I pulled out that the gauge was almost full.
