Quick engine question

Jafo, I'm no engine guru, but I have a AMC 304 in my '80 CJ7 . I have read a lotta stuff about engines, and seem to remember that every time you go away from an AMC block, the bell housing and flywheel become big stumbling blocks.

If you do a search on this site for small-block chevy conversion or near there, I am pretty confident that you'll find a build thread with pictures and text to keep you straight.

The AMC 304 I have with an automatic isn't a racing machine, but there is so much torque that I can pull my boat and trailer up the launch ramp in idle. Going through the swamp woods here in the Deep South in the CJ is just like driving my granddad's John Deere in a rice field.

Luck with the work you're planning.

I have the factory AMC 304 in my '79 CJ7 . It has the T-150 Transmission . Will a small block chevy transplant and still use the AMC 304 bellhousing and flywheel?

Flywheel - no

Bellhousing no too but with adapters I believe it's a commonly done thing...

https://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmissions/manual/t150/

This link will show you all the "goodies" :D

Not a cheap deal...

You have a lot of choices to weigh...

By a stroke of luck, there is a guy locally selling a T-18 mated to a Dana 20 with Bronco low range gears. It has the Chevy bell housing and flywheel out of a CJ7 ! They are asking 550.00 for everything. I don't know what this combo usually goes for, good price? Thinking about picking it up for spares. I'm big on spare parts.

Compared to just an adapter, awesome price.

Make sure what T-18 it is depending again on what you want. Some were low geared first, and some were not (relatively).

that novak site I linked for you has great info on T-18 variations too...
