I ran a 32/36 for over a decade on my 84 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , and used the square Weber air filter. Didn’t know enough at that time to realize the benefit of running the oem cold air breather, and now wished I’d kept it.
However, as my rebuilt AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l (30 over) has an aftermarket crane cam and Borla headers, I endured consistent hard starts with the 32/36. When I’d finally had enough, and decided to thoroughly investigate the issue, realized that the fuel bowl would drain overnight as a result of an improperly adjusted idle circuit. Just wasn’t possible to achieve a good idle AND keep the progression holes covered by the throttle plate with my engine mods.
After researching the issue, quickly realized the 32/36 was woefully inadequate for my modified AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
As such, I upgraded to the 38, and with some effort, was able to resolve the hard start issue. Although I’m still running the square filter, I still wish I had the oem cold air setup.
Even though EFI would be a nice upgrade, the Weber 38 works perfect for my needs. Just my two cents-
