So I stated in my build thread that I had a rattle in the rear of my 85 CJ7 . At first I though it was the aftermarket exhaust rattling in the rear axle, but this past weekend I listened really hard while riding down the road and through the trails and it seems to be coming from my brakes as the sound disappears when I use the brakes. I haven't taken the rear tires off yet as I need a spline to get the lug nuts off, but I will be doing it this weekend. Any ideas as to what it might be? Thanks in advance.

The AMC20 has about 6 different levers or adjusters in side of it. can be any of those. Try adjusting some slack out of your emergency brake. they just might be loose.

What do you mean by you need a spline for the lug nut.

I was wondering the same thing.
But now I'm also wondering what you meant by "The AMC20 has about 6 different levers or adjusters in side of it." There's the auto adjuster at the bottom, typical of most drum brakes; and then the e-brake lever to the rear shoe. But what else?

Honestly I was exagerating a little. Ive done drum brakes on a few cars and the AMC20 has the most number of parts on the inside. Or maybe I was so pissed at the brakes it just seemed like alot. The lever that operates the e brake is long and runs the length of the shoe, I would think this is what it loose causeing the rattling. The auto adjuster has a spring that should keep it from rattling around.

Okay, cause I just took mine off last night and was wondering if maybe some earlier years were a bit different.
Maybe the short cable snapped / rusted that holds the bottom adjuster's lever in tension. Those cables are thin.

My ebrake doesn't work...

Spline... Anti theft device that holds the rims on.

I would start there.. is your cable installed? Broke? Missing? If so Id put money on thats what your hearing.

Oh a wheel Lock. Gotcha.. I was lucky enough to have a random one laying arounf from a jeep whose key worked on a K-10 I bought.. made my day alot easier.

Cable is broke.

As to the lug but spline...

If the cable is broke the inside part is probably loose. Ive used a 22mm 12 pt socket and a big *** hammer to get those off. I also got lucky to find a key in my box that fit a different truck. They apparently dont make to many different keys for them. Check with friends that have em and you may be able to find one that will work.

Interesting. I've never heard of locking lug nuts being called a "spline". Learn something new everyday. Could be a regional thing too.

Thats why I asked.. Ive never heard them called splines either.. now Im just a little more smarter. Just a little.

That's what everyone calls them over on my car forum as well as in my area. I'll be taking a hammer and 12 point to it today as well as replacing my starter solenoid.
