Rear end help

Hi guys, I went to the Doctor and he said he couldn't help me, so I guess I will see if you guys can help me with my rear end...


Taking the advice on this site I was changing gear oil in the pigs, tranny, and T/C when I got to the rear end I was kind of confused. The rear pig cover is held on with torxs screws. Looking around a bit I noticed a set of leaf spring perches outside that of the ones the CJ are attached.
I took a couple of pics...I would like to ID this rear end and find out if perhaps I have a hack rear end in my jeep or if it is a decent unit, just hurriedly installed.

Jeep drives good, no issues
Specs are: 79 CJ5 , 'glass body - frame good. 78 AMC 360ci (I was told a T-150 3spd tranny) (I was told a Dana 20 T/C) I am researching those to confirm....

Thats a AMC20 rear axle.Been told they are a strong unit and with a few mods can be as good or better as a Dana 44 .I got rid of the Torex bolts and replaced them with grade 5 regular bolts.

AMC20 , good unit with a few mods, factory stock under there, I see nothing wrong with the torques.

The one mod you need to put into your AMC20 rear is one piece axle shafts. The factory 2 piece units will not hold up to hard use especially if you have over sized tires.
When you have a rear tire off look for a big nut in the center of the hub. This is the factory setup to hold the hub onto the axle shaft. If you don't have such a nut then your axle shafts must have already been replaced with one piece units.

I'm not a big fan of AMC20 axles. They aren't one of Jeeps best ideas, and have some weak spots. As said, you can really give them a leg up with a one piece axle upgrade, which is their biggest problem, but they have weak tubes as well. As you can see by this picture, It looks like a little oil is getting by at the tube here.

As far as torx bolts go, I HATE them, and have never reused a single one once they come out. I replace every one of them with grade 8 bolts. Other than that, you have a regualar old standard issue AMC20 rear axle.
