1984 CJ7 Jeep with 4" lift, 4.2L I6 AMC engine, 3 speed manual transmission, Dana 300 transfer case, Dana 30 front diff, AMC model 20 rear diff.
Hi ya, got a new problem with my CJ7 today. Replaced a copilot rear drum 2 weeks ago (got disc brakes in the front), brake shoes in the rear are new and those in the front are still ok. Rear pilot wheel seems to be locking up before the remaining 3 wheels when I brake. I also feel the CJ is also resisting to go forward. Just got back from a 10 km ride feeling rear copilot tire is dragging. Wheel rim very hot to the touch, the remaining 3 ok. Jacked the CJ up and spun the tires. Copilot rear spins freely and effortlessly. Pilots rear drags a lot. Adjusted parking brake to allow wheel to spin freely and after another 10 km ride the wheel is locking up again... any ideas?
 
If it has been awhile since the brake fluid has been flushed out that could be the problem or there could be something wrong with the left rear brake cylinder.
 
You might also check to make sure all the return springs/ retainers are in their proper place.

:)One is hot and the others not...........something is out of round.....causing the drag.......Check the drums or the arc on the shoes.....check your auto adjust spanner on the backing plate the spring or cable could be off.........Check you axle shaft for a bad bearing.

Darn, well I replaced both rear brake cylinders with new ones. Had both rear brakes completely disassembled and re-assembled. Things went well for a couple of weeks (three in total). Yesterday I noticed that the left rear tire was again locking-up before the other tires when braking. So it's re-tightening itself again... any other hints?

- Rear axle bearings are fine, replaced the left one a couple of months ago.
- Drum was also replaced with a new one, along with the left axle.

Parking brake was recently put into service (a couple of months ago as well). Could it be that daily use of the parking brake be leading to an over-tightening of the left rear brake as time passes?

Darn, I could really do with a beer now (OK, any excuse is a good excuse for having a beer this early on a Friday).

:)Are you still using the old Brake shoes after you replaced that side with a new drum?........Brake shoes should be replaced at the same time unless your brake shop has the ability to "Arch" the shoes to acquire the proper arch for full contact with the new drum..........Look at it this way......the new drums have a inside diameter and the old shoes when installed have a similar diameter that should be ground to match...........if not the smaller Outside diameter of the old shoe will be worn at the edges and act as a wedge when brakes are applied.............this is a very common problem along with incorrect assembly and loose brake return springs. Have a beer and take a look!

Nope! I did not replace brake shoes nor had them fit to the drum. New brake shoes were installed 4 weeks before replacing the drum. I had no idea I had to replace them. I am surprised the repair shop that replaced the drum made no comment on the need for this (nor charged me for new brake shoes). G'damm... I'll have to sort this out next then, after I have a beer.

I think you should have replaced BOTH drums, the new one might be grabbing more than the old one.

:)Listen............I'm not saying they should have been changed, only that they should have been checked for size and proper contact to you new drum along with proper alignment on the backing plate they are attached to.......... lots of things can make one side grab or lock up..........shoes, drums, contact area, shoe adjustment, lining alignment , oil on the linings on one side or the other and the list goes on..........hard to diagnose over the computer.

The brake shoe adjuster may be installed backwards. On some drum brake configurations, when you go in reverse and hit the brakes, the shoe adjuster will automatically adjust to makeup for wear. If installed backwards, it would tighten up over time as you have described when you are going forwards.
