Looks great, Id think about some corner "L" brackets where the back of the bumper and the side of the frame meet, unless youre really confident on the penetration of your welds. It would also increase youre over all surface area. Dig the embedded receiver to come, should look good, 1/4" is overkill, so you should be good to go. :chug:
x2 Yep it would be really good to tie in that receiver to the frame rails for extra strength :chug:
 
Yeah I'm planning on welded 90 degree 1/4" flat plate on bumper to line up with outside of frame through-bolted to another 1/4" plate tacked inside frame, and then triangular gusset 1/4" plate to outside of those, and maybe a flat plate from top of bumper to top of frame.

That will be way overkill :cool:, but it will be installable and removable with bolts when done (everything will be welded on one side bolted on opposite side) but i wont loose my boat :D

The receiver input tube will be rcessed through, but the gas tank is going back to original spot so not too far, which mean's ill need to probably make even with back side surface of bumper and weld there and outside. Then beef that up with a couple more "gussets" cut to right length and drill for pin hole then walla :cool:

Got to straighten the frame a tad on back before i can get done, and my fingers are telling me to wait until next weekend to continue :cool:

Was hoping it would tickle some fancies... :cool:

I was planning to do exactly like my uncles posted... With a L channel under the stock bumper. Then i came across an old set of forklift extensions while cleaning my yard at my shop. And a 18" x 10' piece of 1/4" plate and figure what the heck... I'll make something sweet...

It'll be heavy, but i was looking for some strength upgrade to the rear anyways...

And my weld on D-Rings will look nice on there too.

Slowly but surely it's coming along nicely...

Just wish I hadn't busted up my fingers last weekend so i could be going home to work on tonight... Got to practice my stick welding too. :cool:

about the busted knuckles, I didnt pick that name, it was given too me,, anyhow, Ive had more grinder accidents that I can count, I dont like running the shrouds, which makes them very dangerous.

I usually wear welding gloves if Im going to do any amount of griding. Just a thought. As you know they do dramatic damage in mili-seconds, its over before you know it started,.,.. the welding gloves give pretty good protection from the occasionally "bump" on the wheel.
 
Yeah... That's a good thought.

I was taking the rust off the frame of a trailer we rebuilt last weekend with a 7" big grinder and wire wheel, almost done and dipped the wheel into one of the wires for the lighting. It caught and as soon as I released the deadman trigger, my fingers got caught in the wire and sucked into the wheel. One side of that wire was loose and it whipped around like a weedeater so fast:eek:

They're not as bad today, but I could have sworn I broke my bird finger after it happened...:eek:

But yeah gloves would have helped, as would less beer, and taking the time to remove the wires from my path like I knew I should :cool:

Either way I've seen how fast it happens, and didn't have to loose a finger to learn at least... A few days of lag on my project is a small price I suppose...

That looks good man! I had the materials I'm using sitting around, so it turned out it's going to be pretty beefy... :cool:

Just got my frame straightened out last night (sort of) so getting ready to re-dry-fit and see where to tack up the brackets...

I'd like to build something like that for my 75, and not just on the rear but the front too. Don't want to tow a boat, but I'd like to do a receiver mounted winch that I could mount on the front or rear. I have a tilt front end, so a permanently mounted winch would be tough.

If you ever feel like coming down to Arnold and doing some fabricating let me know. :D

By the way, I was getting a little nostalgic reading all the comments about the Rubicon. I ran it with a buddy of mine in his early Bronco in 1977. That was a great trip. I've wanted a Jeep ever since. But the first time I went into Rubicon Springs was when I was about 12, with my Dad and Uncle to go fishing. We came in from the Tahoe side in a 2WD Chevy pickup and hiked in the last couple of miles down to the river. The Sierra's are some great country!

Looks great, the bumper will out last the Jeep. I see you got the welding gloves on while grinding !

The welds look great for a stick, Ive been running wire so long, Im not sure I remember how to do it. Ive still got my old lincoln sitting in the corner.

Id say you did a bang up good job, its very well secured, I see you used grade 8 hardware, looks very professional.

Nice to have a California Jeep to work on, around here, we dont hardly even have YJs on the road anymore (rotted out and junked), let alone Cjs, let alone a 74!

Looks very nice! I might steal a couple of your ideas for when I replace the rear crossmember with a bumper in the near future. But I'll be building it with the body off.
 
:chug: Man... If you have any questions let me know. We didn't really know what we were going to do idea wise at all, just found an only fork lift extension, large sheet of 1/4" plate in my shop yard :cool: and knew i wanted something that would tow my boat around and be strong...

As it was my old cross member was toast and body mounts tore up...

So this little project actually fixed a few extra issues I had, and achieved my goals. :cool:
