Hello, New guy here. Just purchased a 1978 CJ7 . I am hoping that somone knows where the body connector is going to the tail lights on the left side. I am having a hard time finding it. My rear turn signal/brake lights are not working. But the front signals work, just blink very slow. Thanks !

On my '83, the harness for the rear (fuel sending unit wire, brake, taillights and turn signal wires) runs down the driver side. All the connections are located at the bottom of the drivers door frame. Hope that is helpful.

The rear lights are also grounded thru the body, which in time, making good contact can be a problem. You could run a jumper wire from the battery negative post to the tailight to test that.

Brake lights are routed through the turn signal switch/lever.
Sounds like the ground connections have gone bad on your tail lights.
Make sure the body is grounded, along with the engine and frame.

Thanks to all. I will check that out. Appreciate the input.

Electrical gnds has been the biggest electrical gremlin in CJ's for many years.
Let here what you find.

Does anyone know if there is a knob on the emergency flashers on the steering column on a '78 CJ7 ? And do turn signals self cancel after a turn? I pulled the steering wheel and found a destroyed spring. Thanks!

Not sure flashers were required then--
YES-they should be 'self-canceling'.

My 79 CJ7 has hazard flasher switch on the column ,
turn signals are self canceling .

Cool. Thanks. Pulled the steering wheel today. Found the turn signal assy spring broken. Replaced. Working good. No turn signals or brake lights yet. No wiring diagrams. Working off of visuals. Ground looks ok. Not sure what the heck is going on. The tail lights are hooked up with what looks like 3 prong trailer connectors. They look like :dung:. Full of corrosion. Troubleshooting continues.:biggun:

Rsparks, Is there a knob on the right side of the steering column for the emergency flashers?

Did the rest of the troubleshooting. I have continuity all the way from the turn signal to the rear tail lights. The tail lights all have good grounds. But I have no power back at the tail lights which confuses the snot out of me. Well, 10 hours is enough. back tomorrow.

Each tail light/head light has it's own gnd.
Don't just think they are good-CONFIRM IT!
CLEAN and re-attach each gnd using a 'star' washer.
Then cover each clean gnd with liquid electrical tape.
Get your meter out and start hunt'n.

Hi LG,

I hunted all day! lol. I checked each ground. And I checked for shorts/opens. Wires are all good. Power not there. Was unable to remove fuse. Finally got fuse out. Cleaned the connections, still no joy. Finally found it. Behind the fuse panel. Bad wire at the flasher connection. Thanks for all the help! Now on to other projects. :chug:
