When I first got my CJ5 the first thing I did was make my front bumper. It looks like darned near the last thing I will be doing is building a rear bumper. A much more complicated affair. It will:

- Be 2"x4"x3/16" or 1/4" steel

- Tapered on the ends

- A tire carrier with all the whistles and bells, a serious tapered baring hinge given to me by a member here, latch space behind the tire for water and fuel, a Sheep Herders Jack, of course a spare tire.

- receiver hitch

- two recovery points

- possibly the tail lights

- and lately I've had the wild notion to add a rear winch with farrel, and this is the point of this thread.

The rear receiver hitch winches look really cool, but aren't of any interest to me. I'd like to build one into the bumper. I don't want a big step like bumper. Do you have a rear winch or know of someone that does? I'm in the idea stage right now and any help would be useful.

I don't see how you can add a winch back there without having a fairly big bumper that hangs off the back. You have to have a pretty wide area to mount one, and to have a wide enough area to mount one, you're going to have to have a pretty good step off the back.

If you put it underneath you have interference with the gas tank and dragging issues, so I don't see another way to do it.

That said, people have come up with some pretty ingenious ways to add stuff to Jeeps, so I'd love to see anything you come up with.

I'm on the same page as you are. I suppose a mount couls be made in FRONT of the gas tank with an access door just behind the front seat. That could be very cool if done right, but that would also require real skill to pull off properly.

Have you ever seen a Jeep with a big ol' step like bumper in the back? I would be using a smaller winch, maybe a 5000 lb unit so it wouldn't need to be a huge step. Ground clearance won't be a real issue.

You get that built, post up a pic, I'd like to see how it worked out for you.
Interesting concept.

IMHO, better to go with a detachable winch. Lots of versatility with one of those.

Actually, when I bought my first CJ back in 93, the prior owner had a HUGE bumper that stuck out past the spare tire. I removed it, but still have it behind the house. It was probably 12" wide.......
