I recently pulled the T-150 Transmission out of my 1975 CJ5 because it was kicking out of first gear. I ordered and installed a rebuild kit and I have 1,3, and reverse but no second. When I push on the shifter it grinds and I can put it in and out of second with no clutch. I pulled the Transmission again to look into it and saw that one of the synchro rings wasn’t lined up properly so I corrected that. Put the Transmission back into and still have this problem can anyone point me in the right direction

Hello Andrew from Maine.

While I’ve never delved into the internals of the mighty 3-speed, I know the internals of similar transmissions. Tip: if that 3-speed is even slightly smoked, toss it quickly for a much-more-preferred 4-speed. Especially considering you’ve already R&R it a couple times.

When you say you installed a “rebuild kit”, what specifically did that include?

I should add that I’m 21 years old and this is my first time digging into a Transmission . I’ve done several clutches on various vehicles and have been working on my own equipment and vehicles since I was 15. Always looking to learn and hear what people that know what they’re doing have to say

Good to hear you’re willing to get your hands dirty. Now a days, most guys your age don’t know which end of a wrench to hold.

Your Transmission issue could be a synchro problem. Maybe the synchro itself or the condition of the little teeth on the 2nd gear. Or, maybe a shift fork/shoe issue. Really can’t be sure until you pull it apart again and get a good service manual or instructions.

Have you used the search function on this site?

Also, you could call Novak and speak with their technical support, (877) 602-1500. They’re good guys, knowledgeable and will likely have the parts you need.
