1982 CJ-7, 258, T176, D300, D30, AMC20 w/ LSD, 3.31 gears, 31x10.5 ATs
So the T-5 in the new-to-me 1982 CJ7 needs (at least) a input shaft bearing. It whines and grumbles loudly in first, second, third, and fifth gear.

I'm thinking of pulling it and replacing it with a T-176 from Jim at CJ5 .com. Is that a good idea? It seems like the easiest way to get in to a more robust Transmission . I looked at a T-18 swap, but it is more involved with revised shafts and clocking rings to keep the Dana 300 .

So far I've pulled together the following parts list for the swap:
* Used T-176
* Used F&R driveshafts
* Used Bellhousing
* New flywheel (while I'm in there)
* New clutch
* New throwout bearing
* New / revised Transmission tunnel cover and shifter boots.

Is there anything else I'll need?

Is there anything I should watch for in buying a used T-176 ?

The only thing I think you missed is a new pilot bushing. The T-176 is a pretty descent Transmission . I think you'll be happy with it. There isnt anything special to be aware of when checking a T-176 . The normal open it up and look , row through the gears and check for too much slop in the mainshaft.

Just did this swap but with a T177 instead and couldn't be happier. If you haven't, check out the gear ratio difference between the T-5 and the T-176 to make sure it works for you.

If your flywheel is in good shape, just take it to a machine shop to get re-ground. It was about $30 for me.

You need a new pilot bearing as Pete said. As per Novak, it's more critical than you think so don't side-step it. I have a separate comment some place on this forum about how hard it was to find the right one. It's the darnedist thing. The closest I found was strictly a pilot bearing from Advance Auto from an '87 YJ with the 6-cyl. Take measurements, mine needed a 1.055 OD and .595 ID and that was the only one I found outside of ordering special from Novak.

You'll also need a different connector for your reverse switch. Online they're about $13 but I found one at Advance for $5 in stock. I lost the model number but found it while searching the internet for it. I'm thinking it's a Dorman product for a ford wiper pump connection or something like that.

Make sure you have the adapter included with the tranny for connection to the Dana 300 .

*edit* Almost forgot - get a new tranny bushing mount and the ones for the stabilizer rod/bar.

Does anyone have a part number for a pilot bearing for this swap? I can't seem to locate anything with those dimensions on the napa or advanced auto sites... I was planning to use Napa BRG B041 but the ID is .613 in.

No. no. no amdavidson. What you need is a T-4 tranny, and have I got a deal for you. Just send all that stuff to me and I'll send you the same parts for installing the T-4 , and you just pay the shipping costs. That's the Jeep-CJ.com deal I'm running today, well...., actually all year! :D

No, seriously though. I could have wrote the same second paragraph of your initial post and it would have been true. Great minds think alike I guess. That's a good upgrade in my book. Great thread. Good luck.:chug:

Saw that you have an '81. Not sure if there is a difference in OD so you may just hold off in buying it till you get the old one out and compare the dimensions.

Thanks for the link to the Advance Auto bearing.

I should have all the parts for the swap in house this weekend (save for the pilot bearing) and will measure and make sure it's the right unit.
