I started with a $30 ebay junk yard dash. It was in pretty rough shape. Lots of cracks and some rusting on the back.

Ground down to the steel and repainted the back.

Cut all the loose vinyl away and added in some expanding foam insulation. Cut it flat and repeated where needed.

Then I sanded it smooth and did three layers of bondo.

It's smoother in person than it looks in photos. Now I plan to use bed liner to finish it up and get an even finish for the new dash. All total, I have spent $60, if I include the sander and bondo I bought.

Will post pics when I finish it up and get it installed, hopefully tomorrow.

Still haven't found time to wrap up the dash, but should on this four day weekend.

With the school year winding down, I'm finalizing my summer plans. Looks like a Howell TBI is in my old CJ's future, along with new seats, and a date with Raptor Lining. Can't wait to get rolling on the summer project list.

Anyone have any hints or tips on the Howell or Raptor liner? Thanks

Interesting concept

Silly question, but what happens when you push on the foam by the bondo?

It cracks tried this on a few that I was building to sell and the first time someone pushes it you can see it..... but since he is gonna put liner on it liner has some flexibility to it so it might work fine

Yes, I'm hoping the liner will hide it when it cracks. The rest of the dash isn't exactly flexible either. I'm going to try the spray can liner first, then this summer use raptor liner when I do the interior of the old girl.

Please keep us posted on the outcome.

With liner that just might be the ticket! :D

Anyone here ever filled a small tear in the pad with something? I rolled my 85 back in the early 90's and have a small tear about an inch long on the pad, otherwise it's perfect. It's bugged me ever since. I've thought about trying to patch/ fill it but I figure if I fill it with something and then sand it smooth, it will have a smooth spot surrounded by the rest of the textured dash.

I can use camel SEM dye to spray it to get it the right color (Honey)

A vinyl fix kit for furniture should work and comes with the texture pieces. The holes in mine were just too big. Hope to finish it this weekend.

Finally finished it up and mounted the dash.

I concentrated on the center of the dash repair so much I didn't pay enough attention to the end of the dash and some of the minor cracks. This is only a temporary coating until I Raptor line the inside later this summer. Before I do that, I will sand it down and fix some of the imperfections I missed this time.

I am impressed. So was that with the roll on liner?

I've heard that is hard to put on thick.

Thanks for the photos.

Nope, the spray can type. I had a can left over from a different project, figured it was worth a shot.

I don't think a dash could be too bad for this. Just sand it down, use expanding foam to fill cracks and holes, then shoot it. Worth a shot.

Alright, today I decided to bob my front bumper. In all I managed to shave about 10 lbs total and 7.5 inches off each side.

After (before paint):

I can also tell the old girl has oil in it by the marking of territory it does underneath it.

I plan to cap the end with the old ones, just have to cut them off the old pieces and weld them on.

All done:

Next goal, after vacation, is to clean up under the hood. New plug wires, valve cover gasket, and organization of the rats nest the po left me.
