My reverse lights do not illuminate when I gear into reverse. Also, when the lights are on the fuel gauge and temp guage seem to work but do not with the lights off. I am going to pull the dash and check/clean all of the connections. Any suggestions other than that?

You need to know what Transmission you have, go to your local parts store and the counter monkeys can generally look it up on their computer system. It's an easy repalcement, take of the doghouse cover and it's there on the top of the Transmission (assuming you have a standard) it simply unscews.

The lights in the dash, speedo, oil pressure, fuel gauge, temp, volts, etc, only work off the headlight switch, parking lights or headlights, other than that they shouldn't be on.

On a side note, this is the moderator talking now, take the time to correctly fill out your profile, that way when someone is trying to answer your questions they don't have to ask you what Transmission , engine, etc you have in your CJ.

Doghouse cover? Is that the plate around the shifter boot and Transfer Case boot?

The dash lights are not on when the switch is off. When I turn on the lights the fuel guage registers as does the temp guage. When the lights are off they do not. Sorry about the lack of vehicle information in my profile. I am learning as I go.

Yes, sorry, that's an old term from my father the truck driver scruffy_smiley.webp

Okay, that makes more sense. So the only time the fuel gauge and temp gauge work is when the lights are on, I misunderstood you. That sounds like you've got a bad ground somwhere. When you turn the lights on that completes the circut to ground, when you turn the lights off, the ground is gone.
