I have a 1980 CJ5 and it came with a new harness. I am very new at doing this and want all the help I can get. I want to rip out the old wiring and dont know where to start.

There are a few wiring schematics out there for your CJ, Somebody makes them with a plastic overlay of all things and an internet search could help. Having one handy has helped me out quite a bit, I have posted an underhood wiring schematic in my gallery but that is for my '86. Knowing how to solder and apply shrink wrap is easy and another helpful item.

Chilton's manuals have good wiring diagrams that will be beneficial.

For starters please don't "rip" any thing out.

You should carefully disassemble and label every thing as it comes off.. It would really help if you told us what brand wiring harness you are working with. Is one with pre-terminated ends that just plug in or do you have to solder and crimp the ends on to the wires? If you take your time and do it carefully it will be pretty easy.

Recently completed (with lots of help from my boys) wiring the 1980 CJ5 . Harness was from ezwire. I left the factory wiring in place and ran the new one right next to it. We took pictures of everything before during and after. I put a battery isolation switch in to totally disconnect power when the jeep is parked. Many people on here helped us get this jeep going (thank you again) so lets see if we can get yours going too. I took it for a spin for the first time last nite, just a mile or so. Its been a while since I could drive, and it felt really good to have it moving again. :chug:

Just did a painless, my only problem was with ignition because of my Limited knowledge. I called them and they were speaking their terms. I switched to an hei and problem solved. I just broke it down into three parts. Engine, dash, body. Is the kit pre terminated? Marked?
