I'm in the process of getting an old 1980 CJ7 running. One of the first things I researched was the engine identification. It decodes as being a 1980 CJ7 engine AMC 232 i6 . When I go to find parts, it seem that I only see AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l listed for the 1980 model year.

So has anyone heard of a AMC 232 i6 in a 1980? If so, how are you ordering engine parts? The engine code is 711C30.

I found several other sites that list the AMC 232 i6 as a 1974. It seems like there is a lot of conflicting info out there. Anyway this makes more sense.

Thoughts?

If you do have a AMC 232 i6 in your 1980 CJ, someone else put it there besides Jeep. Where are you getting the engine # info from, Vin or engine block?

do the i6s have the displacement cast into the bottom near the motor mount like in the v8s?

Check the flat spot on the right side of the motor between # 2 & 3, near the head. What’s the number?

The bore is the same (3.75") just longer stroke and 1/8" higher deck.

I took the numbers from the right side of the block between the 2nd and third cylinder. Based on the engine numbers (711C30), I believe this a 1974 AMC 232 i6 engine.

I looked up the VIN and this is actually a 1981 with a AMC 304 . I called family members to see if they could offer any history. They said the prev owner couldn't get the carb running right so was going to go to fuel injection.

The prob is after his passing, so called friends took the wheels and a bunch of parts from the Jeep. All the gauges and wiring were removed from the interior. I wouldn't be surprised if they swap the engine.

I understand the latter years AMC 304 had probs but would a 1974 AMC 232 i6 be a desirable engine swap?

Also came with the 2bbl opposed to the (A) 1bbl

I thought the first digit (7) translated to 1974 and that only after 1980 did the first digit represent the last digit of the year. Did I get this incorrect?

Yes, you were correct on the year it is 1974 not 1977. However, it is a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l as I mentioned.

711C30:
7 = 1974
11 = month
C = engine type AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l
30 = day

Did the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l come without a mechanical fuel pump? I noticed my does not have one on the right side of the block.

I dropped the fuel tank and there is only a sending unit, no internal fuel pump which suggests this was never a running vehicle. Someone did install fuel injection.

I need to find out where the fuel injection came off of. Unfortunately, I can't seem to upload from photobucket.

Yes on the mechanical fuel pump. It should have a block-off plate on the block and a fuel pump somewhere on the frame rail near the tank or maybe whoever installed the FI didn't get around to installing the pump.

I found out the PO installed a 1974 AMC 232 i6 and put on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l head from a 1987-1993 YJ along with the fuel injection. The dash, gauges, and wiring harness are from the same YJ.

My plans are to install a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l intake manifold with a 32/36 Weber. I will also install a 1981 dash with gauges and wiring.

At least, this is all starting to make sense. Anyone have any ideas as to what price I should ask so I can fund the other purchases?

I have:
Engine wiring harness and computer for a 87-93 YJ.
Fuel Injection Intake with throttle body.
Dash wiring harness with all gauges for 87-93 YJ.
Dash from a 87-93YJ

BTW, thank you all for your valuable input. Very much appreciated.
