Putting my besttop bikini top on today and well it doesn't fit need to be forward more. What the proper spot for it. Was thinking about putting a wedge under the back of it and just tilt it forward.

Question when you bought that did it say it was for Jeep 76-06? If so I think what your seeing is the indentation for the windshield bars used 87-06

Came in the best top box and it said on the box it was for my jeep.

Agreed. When I put a YJ sport bar in my '84 CJ7 , I didn't want the windshield bars at the outer edges as they interfere with entering/exiting the way I like to do. So when I made my windshield hoop (from my old original sport bar that I cut down), I used those windshield bars to make "spreaders" between the YJ bar and the windshield hoop, centered about 6 inches apart from each other and welded on. I used a pipe bender to put a slight curve in them. Then when I got the safari top, it had the same extra space on the sides that your pic shows, plus it had some velcro straps along the outer edges to hook around those windshield bars. I cut and re-hemmed the side edges to remove the extra material and sewed the velcro straps down the center to line up with my home made spreader bars. A couple of velcro grab handles on the spreader bars up top and some welded pipe entry handles on the uprights in the front and good to go. I even used the original windshield bar zippered pads/covers on my spreader bars and sewed some home made zippered covers for the entry grab handles up front.

The top states it for the 78 CJ7 windshield bracket doesn't but it fits and it the one they recommend on all the websites I've been to.

The only other thing I can think of is since you have the older style roll cage that mounts to the top of the wheel well instead of the bottom behind the seat. 871b211e4a231d867894d65ebb9d3833.webp

Is this how the roll bar on a 78 CJ7 should mount. With the back mount on the rear fender and the front legs on the floor or close to it.

That's not how the factory cage on my wife's 79 is. It's like the op's cage

The 78 roll bar , from the factory, was mounted on the wheel well not the floor behind the seat. That change came in 1979. The problem that I see with your bar is that, for bars from 78, it should stand straight up and down with a small arch in the center, Yours leans back, much the same as the 79s and all that came after. Is there a chance that someone has fabricated a roll bar for your jeep that didn't come in it from the factory? Just sayin, it doesn't look like a 78 bar

Very possible why I was asking figured the top was right and the bar wrong. Cutting and welding is no big deal for me. Just got to see if I want to do it the easy why or hard way.

Shame your not closer to Maryland I could give you a factory 79 bar. I'm not using the one in my wife's Jeep as I'm going to run the family style cage out of a 93-95

you could also see if someone in your area has a bikini top for a 79 or 80 that you could try. Since your bar leans back a bit maybe the newer top would fit your bar

This one said it fit from 76 to 81
They will say anything to sell a product doesn't mean it's true

Well then, maybe one that fits an 81 or newer. There must be a difference in the tops. I wouldn't buy a new one but it might be easier than rehabbing your bar

and I'm sure the way they set changed in79

The one in my wife's 79 looks like his. I'll nab a pic in the morning.

I would try returning it and trying a different top could just be a bad run. If the second one is also not fitting then you start looking at the cage

Ordered this one from Amazon so will be easy to return and going to order a different one directly from besttop and see. If this thing hadn't been such a basket case of a jeep I would have questioned the top before the jeep. But we'll see old girl might have the right bar in her.

Ordered another top from besttop directly and same. So it's the roll bar not the top. Going to move the roll bar forward and fab it in right some pictures of what it should look like would be much appreciated.
