Hello from SE Oklahoma! There is a lot knowledge on here and I really need some at this point. Bear with me. 1978 CJ5 , AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-150 , Dana 20 , AMC20 , Dana 30 . Stock no lift. I have replaced damn near everything that rotates and I have this Damn squeak, squeak, squeak from underneath. Before you say "angry sparrows", here's the deal. I jacked up the rear of the jeep, wheels off ground and emplaced jack stands on the tubes, Backed up with 3 ton jack on Differential housing, backed up with bottle jacks under frame....see where I'm going here? safe....moving on. New drum brakes and shoes, spin wheels...no squeak, New Tom Woods drive shaft with new u joints, Did a complete reseal of Dana 20 and T-150 , new clutch kit. Changed pinion nut and seal, torque 250 ft lbs, all slack removed from yoke and spins smoothly. I start the jeep, place in second gear, 2wd and ease out on the clutch.....squeak, squeak, squeak.....sheeeeiiiitttt I get underneath with shaft, wheels, everything that rotates moving and I can hear the squeaking but can't locate it....I don't know what else to do....Help

Solution
The Moser axle installation is complete, still had the squeak....I dropped the driveshaft and pulled the rear output shaft housing assembly, I put a cheesy, output shaft bearing in when I was resealing the Dana 20, it was a difficult installation and I noticed I had bent the oil seal up trying to seat it. I installed a heavy duty seal with metal on both sides, went in much easier with no damage to the seal. I torqued the output shaft yoke nut until I had about .003 shaft endplay. I had replaced the transmission mount but I had not replaced the motor mounts. Hey i'm under the jeep and the thing is gonna squeak anyway so I'll go ahead and do the motor mounts..... dropped it down and went for a drive....squeak fixed! IDK what I did but...
Throw out bearing replaced?

yes sir, complete clutch kit and resurfaced fly wheel, no noise when clutch petal is engaged and release is smooth as butter..proud of the clutch job! checked with jeep idling, rear jacked up and in neutral, no tire rotation so the gap is good....rotation of tires and clutch engagement starts 2 inches off the floor....smooth. This squeak starts with rotation, pretty sure a throwout squeals when you engage the clutch.

Is the squeak in sync with the engine, The drive shaft or the rear tires? That would get you closer to where it is. Does it change if you put it in a different gear? I have no idea where it might be coming from but knowing these things might get you closer to where it's coming from.

Mine did that right before I spun a hub off one of the 20 shafts

caveman, it is in sync with the engine. Faint squeak in first gear but when I change to second it gets louder and picks up with speed of the driveshaft and tire rotation. J68, I have considered the axles but when I shut the engine off and rotate the tires by hand I hear nothing, I can push and yank on the wheels and no slack or noise of any kind, just smooth rotation.....I've started at the front and worked my way back and pretty much replaced everything but the axles so here we are. I have had the Diff cover off and everything looks good. Can I pull the hubs and inspect the axle bearings without disassembly of the brakes? Those new brakes were a bast@#d to put together and I don't want to do it again if I can avoid it..

I didn't, either...mine only did it weighted on the ground...was intermittent at first, then became more consistent over time

Afraid not

The one piece shaft upgrade is a worthwhile venture, though...even if you don't wheel it hard, it's an Achilles heel waiting for a place to happen

Can't find the one piece axles in stock anywhere...I guess this is such a problem that they can't keep them in stock...I wanted the G2's, Ten factory are in stock but the reviews aren't that good. I tried to pull the hubs with the recommended puller and that aint happening...hubs might as well be welded to the axle, so I find it hard to believe that they will spin and fail on the axles but I really don't know at this point.

They absolutely will...whether that's your issue or not I can't say

I will say it was not hard to tell where the squawk was coming from, though...

Summit has the Mosers in stock: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSR-CJ-S

Awesome, thanks J68! I'm gonna order these because at this point, I see nothing else that it could possibly be...if someone has any other possibilities on what it could be I would certainly love to hear from you...I've spent a considerable amount of money and time on this issue and it's disappointing to not be able to figure it out...I'm by no means the best mechanic but most of the time I do pretty good...

Even if it's not, it really is money well spent

So the yoke was the last thing you did? No squeal prior to doing it?

yeah it was squeaking prior to me changing it...thats why I changed it. Thought that might be the problem but it wasn't...and the brakes, and the driveshaft, and the u joints, and the TC case output seal, and the lol
"laying on my back in the garage staring at the ceiling" my wife thinks I've possibly lost my mind because this has turned into an obsession.

I've had the Mosers for at least 25 years. I don't know if that is your problem, but eventually it will be most probably in you do much wheeling off road.

I got the Mosers on the way. Honestly, I don't know anything else it could be. I've replaced pretty much everything that could possibly squeak. I had this upgrade scheduled for the future anyway but there is no time like the present! I just hope this gets rid of the squeak.

I put Moser one-pieces in my AMC20 last year and now the rear passenger side squeaks. I think I have to bust them back open and pack some more grease in there though.

I called the previous owner, he is a good friend of mine. He advised that the only time he really used the jeep was during deer season. The rest of the time it was parked under a big oak tree. He also told me that he regularly forded a river on his deer lease to get to a good hunting area so that's a huge red flag on the squeak issue! Told me that sometimes the water would pour over the side and into the cab of the CJ. Just washing the floorboards out! It never quit on him though! That explains why the hubs are rust welded to the axles....

Got the Mosers in today, I'm wading into unfamiliar territory here; specifically AMC20 thrust block removal. I have zero experience with differential repair. Can I remove the thrust block without removing the carrier? I don't want to mess with the shims, tolerances ect. in the Diff. If someone can explain how to do this and break it down into layman's terms, it would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be in there at all...will need access to a bearing press, though:

You only need to pull the diff cover to get out the thrust block. There is a locking pin you have to knock out of the way and then the thrust block should just fall right out when you rotate the diff. Push the pin back in place and you should be good to go. Took me all of 5 minutes when I did mine. Took longer getting the diff cover off and on.
