Hey why does the message block go right straight to a quote od the last post?

Lumpy - not big deal, I'm a desert rat. And most of the work was done after 10:00 at night. Look at the time of my last post here. :)

I'm cleaning everything up now and will have Rob evaluate the parts. There is some rust pitting. Is it bad enough to replace, I don't know. I have found a couple broken springs. Maybe why the Transmission was pulled. Also lost what as best I can guess are ball bearings from one of the shift blocks. Three somethings shot out in three directions. Back out to finish up now.

Parts evaluation complete. Some were "good enough", others were scrap, two were unexplainable. Unexplainable? The reverse/first sliding coupler would not slide. Both the basket and the hub would slide just fine in other used parts Rob had on the shelf, but mate together they would not do. What? They worked together for many years, now they won't. How does that happen? Now with the addition of a few used parts, as soon as the case is clean (90%) and painted (0%).

I suppose I'll need to break with tradition here. Until now, If I worked on it, It was painted "Old Ford Blue". It only seems appropriate to paint the Transmission "Old Ford Grey".

There are 3 ball bearings in the first-reverse coupler that if slid to far will eject those balls at a rapiid rate across the shop

Yeah ...:).... I know. Once I knew what to look for I found one last night. Never found the one that shot me in the belly or the one that took a trip out across the lawn. Interestingly enough those springs were bad, two were rusty and nasty, the third was an old break. I knew there was something in here, thought they would a long plate like second and third would have. It's so darned hot I can hardly touch the big metal parts today. Will have to wait until sundown.

WAIT-You have a lawn?:D
LG

Good point, lawns are for Phoenix. Nothing really gets lost here, eventually I'll see it sparkling in the dirt, aaahhh errr, that would be sparkling in the beautiful desert landscape.

Now I can't seem to get the darned thing back together. The gears seem to slide on properly, but the snap ring notches aren't even close. I've also noticed that there are differences in the Transmission diagrams. Looks like yet another trip to Robs with a pile of parts to sort out. I'm sure it's something small, but I'll be darned if I can figure out where I've gone wrong.

Frequently Google is my friend when stuck like this. For this it isn't. No images of gears going on the main shaft properly. I need to see down deep in the center.

If your try'n to snap-ring onto a shaft.
When this has happened to me. It's because I have the shaft backwards.
LG

Not having trouble installing the snap rings. The gears aren't lining up properly with the snap ring groves. I mean they aren't even close. Unquestionably something is not on the shaft the way it's supposed to be, but according to the schematics the gears are lines up correctly.

hole and Peter - Oven cleaner worked great, now if I can cool it off enough to paint.

Paint - I was going to give in and paint the Transmission the proper "old Ford Gray", but saw one painted blue and by god I'm sticking to my guns and will paint it/they "Old Ford Blue". I know, I know can't help it, if I 've worked on it it gets painted "Old Ford Blue".

With the heat-The spray paint should dry before it hit the tranny's surface. :poke:
Good luck on deal'n with the snap ring deal.
Sometimes, snap rings are the work of the devil.

Paint - Been there done that.

I'm sure Rob will know exactly where I went wrong and I'll feel foolish.

Please post what what you find out.
I have never rebuilt a T-18 .
Pull'd a few for rebuild'n, they are :censored: heavy.
LG

For the T-18 alone, 150lbs dry weight. I thought the Transmission and Transfer Case were a little heavy when I pulled them out of the back of the jeep and set 'em down on the motorcycle jack.

And Rob came through exactly as expected. I had been using the or a well centered snap ring as the separation point between first/second and third/fourth. I had expected the first/second clutch basket to end at the beginning of the serrations on the main shaft. Where in reality there is a full 1 1/2" of shaft protruding. The main shaft and gears are together now.

At this point the great big lower idler gear set is in front of me, with it's 88 needle bearings waiting for me frankly is scaring me to death. Ahhh, but tomorrow is another day.

At times it would have been nice to have pain someone to rebuild this thing. But there is no question about the fact that if I had to do another one next week it would go together quicker and smoother. The most difficult part to do was the bottom gears. 88 bearings to put in place one at a time, easy but tedious. The most difficult part of the whole thing is the weight of everything in a T-18 is heavy along with decently tight tolerances. There is also a definite sequence to doing everything and you need to follow it.

I'd do it again.
