CJ 7 1978 imported to israel I think but now in Egypt.
Hi all ,

Quick recap I live in the uk but have a CJ6 77 in egypt in a place on the red sea called dahab. I did think it was a AMC 232 i6 but it had a 2 barrel carter so now I think its a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
How can you tell them apart ?

Ive searched a lot but cant find out what screw theads are on my jeep and forgot to bring home a bolt.

The two holding on the centre inlet manifold have been bodged in the past a and I want to retap and put in new ones when I re do the gasket.

Can any body tell me the most usefull tap and die sizes I will need for this model please. Its bad enough with all the old uk sizes ive no idea on american threads.

And what size the inlet gasket bolts are.

So far ive redone the piston rings so its not leaking oil anymore.

New HTI distributor and weber carb.

New electric fuel pump and lines and electric fan.

New rocker cover and new pcv system.

New battery and rewired everything under the bonet, sorry hood.

New bell rank clutch assembly , I can now press the clutch in properly and gear changes are a lot more smoth after finding the gear shift asembly was all lose in the top of the gearbox, the cup wasnt even srewed on and no spring..

The jeep is now driving something like it should and is now probably the best jeep in dahab after having TLC that didnt involve a hammer:).

All the best from the uk and thanks for any help.

cheers

I assume you are referring to the ”intake manifold” but can’t tell you what the bolt size is. I just went through my official Jeep OEM Technical Manual and nowhere are the bolt sizes given (just the torque specs) and I don’t have an AMC I6 in my stable at the moment to check; hopefully one of the others on the board will. I can tell you that the torque spec is 23 foot pounds. In 1978 I don’t think we were doing any metric crossover yet, at least not domestically, so the “old UK” as you say, or what we call “standard” threading is most likely what would have been used used; not so much today but we still drive a mile, not a kilometer. However I never did understand how your gallon got 5 quarts but here in the US we only have 4, and then there is the mystery as to why a British hundred weight is really 112 pounds and not the expected even 100, but that is just one of the things I love about the UK. (Not being sarcastic here.)

If you look at your VIN the letter in front of the last 6 numbers of the VIN will tell you what size the original motor/carburation was. A = AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a 1 barrel carb, C = AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a 2 barrel carb, and E = AMC 232 i6 with a 1 barrel carb.

Just another thought here. You mentioned the new electrical fuel pump; did you install a pump cut off switch in case of a crash or roll over?

Hi sadletramp,
thanks for the reply, no i havent installed an electric pump isolator , I had not though about it. On the plus side im not planning on putting myself in the position of rolling over as that would really spoil my day:mad:.

Really I just need to know what the thread is , nearest ive got is, its probally UNC or UNF.

Are you metric now in the states ?

As for the vin plate , there is not one. Which is why ive had problems with research. all ive got is

on the chassis 2382-77
on the engine block by the distributor 90317

The jeep being a 77 CJ6 is a late export model after the end of CJ6 in 75 in the states. They could have used any componenents using up stock.

:chug:

Read the threads. If your are talking about an intake manifold bolt, can you pull one of the remaining bolts to measure? Just a thought. And I might have missed something here...not sure. Good luck!

Hi , it's what thread it is, I'm interested in. The jeep is in Egypt I'm in the uk at the moment.

I can’t make the casting number work as there should be a letter in it rather than just numbers. Look between and below the number 2 & 3 spark plugs for a number.

They teach metric to the school kids but we still drive in miles and build houses in inches and feet; also the number one sport in the nation, American football, is played in yards as well. Cars, appliances, and the like will use metric fasteners due to globalization so you need to have both sets of tools and hand.

I think you are looking at 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" bolts. Not sure if you have NAPA in the old country, but they have a "Exhaust Manifold Mounting Kit" PN 600-3243 that may be what you need. Good luck and give the Queen our love.

Phew , I've spent days trying to track down the numbers on this jeep , I can't make any of it work . The only thing I'm sure of is its a 77 CJ6 .

Everything pointed to a AMC 232 i6 with a single barrel carter. When I changed the carb it's a two barrel., hence I now think its a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

I've got the gasket set , picked that up in dahab for the manifolds. It's just these two knackered centre intake screws I need to retap.

Maybe I should just retap them in metric and anything else that I find that's a problem.

Thanks guys for all your input :)

It really wouldn't matter if you re tap them to metric...I have read that using brass bolts work really well since the strength isn't affected by the heating and cooling of the manifolds like with steel. You can get them at marine supply stores. Good luck and when you get to Egypt give our love to the Muslim Brotherhood. :D

I dont think many people in egypt still love the brotherhood. ordinary people whilst religous are secular in their political views. Most are really struggling now.

It really is a shame countries are brought down by religous fanatics.

Anyway hows the snow in Colarado ? I did Breck two years ago and scored the best snow in 10 years. 55 inches in the last 7 days. Took me an hour and a half to find a ski in one forest at apahoe basin.

Best skiing holiday ever, and the Kinosha steak house WOW fantastic american food.

Back to Jeeps , yes im convinced now a metric tap is the way to go.

cheers all

Mark, head this way. Just got almost two feet of powder in the last 24 hrs...this time you should try Snowmass...great ski area that is huge...you can ski all day and never the same run twice. Come in the summer and we will go jeeping on old mining roads and visit ghost towns. Glad we got the manifold issue sorted out. Just be sure to not over torque them.
