What do you think, low back for full? I need new seats and was thinking of going to low back seats. It's 84 CJ7

thats my plan. Mine came with a set of bestop seats and I don't like them. I thought of installing some semi low backs out of 90 f-AMC 150 , they recline.

I know the low backs may be period for some CJs but for safety my vote goes to full backs.

I vote full back as well I really like the beard full backs in my 7.

I also like the high backs better and thats what came in the '84s

I have almost brand new best top low back seats in my 84 CJ7 and have full plans on swapping them out for a set of high backs, with reclining options

I can only speak about a CJ5 .

Finding replacement seats is a real PITA, especially if you are a big guy. Right now I have 70-80 Chevy work van seats in mine because they are the same as the 77 had new. The seats are low back, non reclining and as plain as they get. They fit, in size and they bolt right to the pedestals and/or sliders with no modifications. they are also easy to get in and out of but do not do a great job of keeping you in position when things get rough. They are reasonably comfortable.

My experience with after market seats is, they suck! they are, on average, too small where they should not be and take too much room where they should not. And worst of all they are as comfortable as the bench at the bus stop.

one more point, the reclining feature is pretty much useless in a CJ5 . Unless you are 5 feet tall and have the seat slid forward all the way. The passenger seat is all the way back to the roll bar/fender well and my drivers seat is there because it has to be. The after market seats I have seen, in person, set you higher ( thighs contact bottom of wheel) and farther forward ( navel contacts steering wheel) and make getting in and out almost impossible.

Wheeler, I wish you luck with the F-AMC 150 seats, please keep us posted on that project.

Master craft have a great reputation and from what I have seen the Corbeau look good as well. The biggest problem I have is spending that much money on line with out ever seeing/setting in them. Have you noticed that a lot of the manufactures tell you what waist size there seats are. Most would have fit me when I was 18. but that has been a while.

My plan, at least today, is to order a (one) Corbeau Baja JP wide and try it on. They have assured me they have a good return policy so depending on what I find I can keep it or swap/return for the XRS, although I have no need of the recline feature. If that does not work I can try the Master craft seat.

I figure the f150 won't be too bad. We did the same swap into my 93 dodge 250 and it was a bench seat. I agree the aftermarkets suck. I'm 5'6" and my thighs hit the wheel and my belly's almost against the wheel, also the bestop has a bar along the bottom of the back that hits the tail bone.

Mine has low back seats and just a lap belt. I don't feel real safe with that setup. A lot of body parts can flail around in a rollover. I think that I might go to higher back seats and perhaps even add a shoulder harness. I rolled a 99 Cherokee a few years ago and was glad that I was strapped in. I thought about at complete five point or three point harness, but that might be overkill. Anyway, have 'em and wish that I had what you have.

yes shoulder belts out of CJ7 /yj is in the plans

:)IO have you ever thought about doing a Wheel Well notch on your CJ?........It allows that seat to be moved back 3-4-5" without hurting the tire clearance inside your wheel well.......as long as the tire is no larger than 33" you should be fine as under compression the tire & rear axle is moving away from that area......I have even seen guys with 35" tires do it using a combination of either offset wheels or a 1"spacer...........
I know what you mean about needing that extra clearance! I would like to hear your feedback on that Baja JP wide!

IO & Tarry, I have the Corbeau Baja Ulta seats, I was just looking at their website and the baja jp seats. It's interesting that the reg. ulta and jp seat say they fit 38" waists, I'm only a size 31 and mine are a snug fit (I like that though)
Also the ulta is 22.5 wide and the jp is 21.5 wide (overall) I had to take my cj center console out as there wasn't enough room for it.
Just some food for thought.
It will be interesting to get some feed back about the jp wide.
By the way I love my seats, they are very comfortable even after an all day trail ride.

:)Dog, I hear you.........the Corbeau is a great seat for a smaller "posterior" I have seen bigger guys with that seat in the large version and they never set down in the seat as it's designed to do.
I have a suspension low back seat out of a compact car.......they are real comfortable but once I did swing pedals in my early CJ it became even more of a problem getting away from the clutch & brake pedal......I put a tilt in and that made a difference but I'm also going to notch the tub and move the seat back 3-4 inches which will make all the difference in the World.........on the pass side that will remain in it's current location as I would never give up the under seat tool box and / or access to it. Nothing but compromises!

Well, I think I will just get the same high back Bestop again. in black this time.

For whatever reason, I always liked the stock low-back seats, and probably because they are the same height as the back seat. But it's like oil, tires and paint colors - no right or wrong answers - to each his own based on what they wanna do or have it look like.

I just replaced my Stock Low backs with bestop Highbacks dont know why any one would want low backs they gave me back aches. they went in the trash. love my Bestops one of the most comfortable seats Ive sat in, almost too comfortable IMO. driving late at night I might doze off...

My Bestop Trailmax II seats are quite comfortable, they are larger and thicker than the oem ones, plus the recliner is a great addition. Getting them to fit with me in them was another story. I'm around 6' and it really puts me a lot taller on the oem seat mounts to where my legs are quite close to the steering wheel and my head closer to the roll cage. So I have made a few changes to lower them down with some results. I wonder if I should have bought Corbeaus instead, either way it is an expensive addition.

My low backs are really soft and comfortable wich is good as they are the only thing left that goes with that vin number
