Congressman Attempts to Close Public Lands by Circumventing Legislative Process

Contact your Representatives to oppose H.R. 1925!

On November 10, U.S. Representative Maurice Hinchey of New York, along with 88 other colleagues, sent a letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar asking that he circumvent normal legislative procedures and administratively close more than 9 million public land acres in Utah. Effectively designating Wilderness areas without public debate or congressional approval only further erodes the public's confidence in their government. Hinchey is attempting to thwart the legislative process by having the public lands described in his bill, H.R. 1925, America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009, administratively protected by the Secretary.

Specifically, the letter directs Salazar to "utilize the considerable authorities granted to you under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act and other statutes to administratively protect the wilderness characteristics of the lands contained in the Red Rock legislation until Congress acts to protect them statutorily."

This letter comes on the heels of an October 1 hearing of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands of the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources regarding the consideration of H.R. 1925 in which members of Utah's own Congressional delegation testified in opposition to the bill. In fact, not a single member of Utah's delegation supports this legislation. This legislation will ban off-highway vehicle (OHV) access to public lands to those who live and recreate in Utah. To see the Utah delegation and Ranking Member Doc Hastings speak out against H.R. 1925, click here. To read AMA's press release on the hearing, click here, and click here to read Hinchey's press release on H.R. 1925.

H.R. 1925 would designate 9.4 million acres as federally protected Wilderness, and directly affect the Moab, San Rafael Swell and Chimney Rock areas, among others, in Utah. These popular OHV areas represent some of the most important remaining OHV recreation areas in the state. The proposed Wilderness designation would also make the land off limits to all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders and mountain bikers.

Your help is needed now to stop H.R. 1925. The fastest way to reach your U.S. Representative is to call them. You can find contact information for your elected officials by visiting: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml

Please contact your Representative right away and urge them to oppose H.R. 1925. Encourage your friends and family to voice their opposition as well.

Thanks for the heads up, I was in Souther Utah when clinton bravely went to the Grand Canyon to announce his theft of land from Utah, he was very smart to avoid the scene of the crime. So Texas is thinking about receding uh? I may be moving.

Rush its Secede, If we recede we end up in Oklahoma and nobody wants to see that happen.I think spell check in out to get you.
And yes it keeps looking like a better and better option all the time

I sent an e-mail about this to my senator and he sent something back about it was tied up in a blue ribbon fact finding committee of some sort. This is more than likely to let things calm down a bit before they give us the high hard one. I will see if I can find the mail he sent me and post it for every one.

The only time we are safe is when the bastards are on vacation.

this is what Senator Sam Johnson had to say.
the important thing is it is apparently not scheduled for a vote yet.

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 1925, "America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009." As an avid outdoorsman and member of the Conservation Caucus, I appreciate having the benefit of your views.

Introduced by Maurice D. Hinchey (D-NY) on April 2, 2009, this bill designates certain wilderness areas in Federal portions of the Red Rock Canyons of the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin Deserts in Utah. It also sets forth new administrative provisions. For example, the Department of Interior would be required to file a map and legal description of each designated wilderness area with the appropriate Congressional committee as well as the exchange of state-owned lands within such areas, federal reservation of water rights, and authorized livestock grazing.

This bill was referred to the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands on April 29, 2009. Please know that I will keep your concerns in mind should this bill come to the House floor for a vote.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to do so in the future if I may be of service. For more information on this and other important issues, please visit my website http://www.samjohnson.house.gov

SAM JOHNSON.
Member of Congress

this is what Senator Sam Johnson had to say.
the important thing is it is apparently not scheduled for a vote yet.

Hinchey is attempting to thwart the legislative process by having the public lands described in his bill, H.R. 1925, America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009, administratively protected by the Secretary.

The problem is, Hinchey is trying to bypass the legislative process by having the Department of the Interior Secretary administratively close the land. That means NO VOTE by Congress, it just happens.

Hinchey, I believe, knows that he cannot get his bill past his fellow Congressmen (and women). So, he is trying to sneak it in the backdoor before anyone can stop him.

We need to act now to not lose some excellent wheeling areas.

I know, a few weeks back I picked up Dragon Natural Speak, it is probably the best piece of software I have used in many moons, but the learning curve is a pain in the pass (it will not let me say bad words). Of course the lack of proof reading is all my fault.

Johnson’s letter is not a resounding vote of confidence, “I will keep you concerns in mind” is not the same as “I will do everything in my power to stop it”

Look friends, here are the facts, off road use is not on our politicians radar at all. As an elected delegate I can tell you that I am frequently the only person in the room raising concerns about it. Utah has a long history of electing rinos (republicans in name only) in fact every Governor that I can recall has been a rino. I am not trying to get into a D vs R debate because the fact is the D’s are almost always the ones that want to close land and the R’s are usually the ones that go well perhaps we should talk about it first, if that is ok.

Anyway in the primary I had district meeting with huntsman our former Governor before obama saved us from him. I asked huntsman what he planed to do about the land grab from the feds, it was very clear that he had not prepared for this question at all, he danced around and gave me a BS answer. His Lt. Governor, now Governor seems to have more of a spine so I think the feds will have more of a fight on their hands this time, but I will contact his office anyway.

If you want to stop this find out when your district caucuses are and go get elected or elect people that are like minded. If you are in Utah and reading this the Republican caucuses are in March.

a letter to my congressman.
everyone please call or write your own.

Congressman Johnson;
In regard to Bill H.R. 1925 and the closing of public lands in Utah and Colorado, I don't believe the people of those states are in favor of this bill, I don't believe that the people of this country are in favor of this bill. Mr. Hinchey, of New York, is attempting an "end run" in having Secretary of interior Salazar put the area in administrative limbo for eternity. This would circumvent the legislative process and disregard the wishes and best interest of majority of the people of this country.
I would like, very much , to not find a party in New York telling me I can't be in the big thicket or the big bend and I will no longer be "allowed" to canoe down the Rio grand. I believe I am representative of an environmentally conscious outdoorsman and I believe that as a group we are conducting ourselves in a responsible manor not requiring supervision by any government agency, other than aid in the continuing education of the public on the required etiquette
for enjoying our resources, "stay the trail" and etc.
From what I have seen and read the people of Colorado and Utah are doing a pretty fair job of managing their resources, please help them to continue to do so and in doing so protect our ability to do the same.
If the opportunity arises, please express my feelings and opinions to Mr. Salazar on this issue.

If your useing Dragon and it is working this well , you have done a lot better than I ever did with it.
I am building so much bad Karma teasing you about this, when it comes back around I hope it, at least, gets a good laugh.:chug:

Its an interesting thing, SEMA, the off road magazines, and the 4x4 clubs go with the tread lightly stuff in an effort to find common ground with the tree huggers and it never works. The fact is they are only going to be happy when all off road use is banned. I think it is time to approach this with the attitude that we are going to destroy as much land as possible and then let the tree huggers find common ground. I hope everyone is contacting your reps, if you sit back and take it you will get what you deserve.

Dragon may not the best solution but its the best I have found, so far I really like it. The only problem I have found is you loose your place in a thought because you are focusing on how you are pronouncing the word so it will type it. Seems at this point you need to put in 6 months of working with it before it is set up and working correctly.

Karma is all in your head, just like the voices that tell you to kill, then when you listen its just someones bad Karma.
