Shell Rotella

A while back we had a discussion about motor oil for the Cj engines and Shell Rotella was mentioned as one of the best. Had the wife call Napa today while I was at work and they said they only have it for diesel engines. Say what?

Unfortunately the guy answering the phone has certain rules he has to follow because of legal issues. So he has to state use the oil spec'd for your engine, or lingo along those lines. Take that same question and ask him at a bar having a few drinks and he'll give you the answer you're looking for. Shell is great and I have used it for MANY MANY years in everything from my hotrods to boats. It has friction modifiers in it and I have even used it on my motorcycles.

I know it can have more detergents to clean diesel engines and their additives are specific for low RPM high load engines. Older diesel oils were popular because of the additives that they had while newer diesel oils have less of since diesel emissions passed for 07 model year. New diesel oil are safe for cats but do not have that good old additives they use to have.

New oils are good for anything you want to run them in, especially our older motors!

He's right it is a diesel oil, but the additive package is better than auto oils for the flat tappet cams we run. Wally world has the best prices around here.

I agree wallyworld has a good price was 12-13 and now is bit more in the 14 range.. Hope it comes back down as "barrels" come down more.. and stay down for longer time. In the midwest Menards has a good price also it 13/gal on sale this week.

Valvoline is also a pretty good oil

I had a squeekee tapit on a new rebuild and was very bumed..... Changed to Rotella and no more squeek.

I have a buddy who builds VW motors and did a test on oils for wear and power produced. Multiple runs, with all parts replaced after each run. Brad penn racing oil, mobile 1 full synthetic/royal purple, etc. Those are the top 3 he tested rotella was like 5th. Rotella is a main stay with bugs so if an aircooled motor runs better on mobile1 full syn. it's good enough for me.

Well I grabbed the Rotella alreaady and will probably change it tonite. Another friend of mine told me to drop in a quart of ATF and let the motor run till it warmed up. He said it helps clean it out better. Myth? Fact?

I've heard of the ATF thing but never tried it.
Rotella is already a high detergent oil so I think I'd leave the ATF out for now.

I come from a motorcycle racing community and we all swear by rotella oil. We regularly hit the rev limiter on these bikes several times per race and never blow a motor. Alot of that is due to the high quality of the motor but the rotella oil holds it together. Synth oils are not an option due to the frequency of changes.

Rotella has been hashed out to no end on the JeepForum... dozens of threads over a few years... The stuff works and is a premium oil

JeepHammer and a few others said the Rotella is a high detergent oil and will loosen up more sludge if you have a old engine.. good thing but..... this could plug up your oil filter... So if you have JUNK in your engine guys like JH said to change the filter only after 200 miles.. do not want to plug up the filter with junk because the bypass would then be activate. Then change your oil and filter often and maybe cut your filter open to see how much junk is in there..

Look down the oil fill hole on valve cover with flashlight.... see lots of junk and sluge you have a dirty engine...

Do not use ATF and such in oil.... where is all the junk going to go when you loosen it up. Better off doing this clean out a little bit at a time with a high detergent oil like Rotella.

Again hashed out to death..... look over at JeepForum if you want to read half a days worth or so. Gen it was approved as a good choice for AMC engines... Valvoline was also another good choice.

Ok thanx for the replies. I changed it out last nite without the ATF. I'll take a look like suggested and go from there.
