Shop manual requirement

Shop manual requirement
It comes in a collapsible tube sort of like tooth paste

I like the fact old and redundant questions are re-hatched. The reason being is the age-old thought that new ideas come into play. What was once thought of as the "right way" to do something, may have an easier (and still right way) to do it.

And then there's comeraderie:

This goes back to sitting around the primordial campfire talking about the proper way to skin a saber-tooth. It brings us together, helps teach the younguns, and keeps the "spirit" alive.

If someone posts the question "how many lug nuts does my right front wheel have?" I'll answer it with a smile. This forum is a community and Im here to help if I can, even if it means changing a diaper or two

It shows participation and interest....the reason many of us are here. :chug:
:notworthy:
I appriciate this attitude and outlook! I don't (yet) have a FSM for my newly purchased 74 CJ5 , and while I haven't asked the "Will cutting 3" off my dipstick improve my horsepower?" kind of questions, I'm sure being a novice jeeper I've asked a few "Jeeps for Dummies" answerable posts... I am thouroughly appriciative of all the answers i get and infomation this site has helped with.

Not to say however I don't agree with the main topic starter here when he said to get one... I just appriciate that even though people can blow me off as a newbie, i haven't been, and thats one of the reasons I'll soak up all the knowledge shared with me and do my part to return the favor When I'm that old school Jeeper smiling at the newbs...

TLDR? ^ ?? Me niether... and i wrote it... :wasted:

I don't remember if I got this link here or another site, but thought I would share it in this thead since it is an electronic copy for people to get a few answers for 84-86 CJ's.

I know I have some dumb questions, but have appreciated all the help and great answers I have received here.

I agree you need as many manuals as you can afford, but is there a consensus on which ones are better?

I have a couple manuals but they are not near as fun to read as this forum. Many times, I remember items from this list when my jeep breaks in the middle of a river and I can't seem to locate my manual.

Also, I am that guy that now travels throughout this beautiful place we live in and I need something that actually interests me on the plane. I normally lurk in the shadows and just read..... And I like hearing the same questions over and over and I tend to smile a little when someone posts the link for the item that has already been covered.

In the end, this is the best forum I have found and its because people take the time to answer questions, no matter how easy it may seem to some.

This thread just won't die.:D

I thought you killed this long time ago

but I am now reading the JEEP CJ rebuilder's manual by Moses Ludel
as well as have the Chilton and Haynes

I think it should be mandatory that all Jeep-CJ forum users own a shop manual! There are posts were it seems like someone is just to lazy to find material in a search or out of there shop manual(if they even have one). If you first read your manual and need clarification or any kind of help then here is the place to get it. First try to help yourself then ask for help.
Am I being out of line? ...Good were on the page now how does it get inforced? I'll leave that up to someone else to figure out.

VERY WELL SAID:chug:

IMHO owning a jeep with out owning every source of information you can get your hands on is too confusing to even think about.:bang:

I don't mind answering questions that are in the manual.

If you don't want to buy a manual or too lazy to open it, That's fine with me. There's always helpful people on Jeep-CJ.com that are willing to answer questions.

Getting back to the original post...
This is the tack that I normally follow :agree: however, sometimes my FSM is at my home shop and a question occurs while I'm at work (where I have internet access). Or my FSM is loaned out to one of my friends (that I trust to return it back to me). That being said, even the FSM can suffer from information that may be outdated by newer technology or in 'Betty's' case lack of available parts so I have to fab something. Still in all, it's entertaining to discuss online new ideas, products and methods, since that is what this forum seems to be about.

So..... how do I change a flat tire??? :poke:

I have 3 Haynes manuals. One clean for the garage, one for dirty hands in the garage and another to have inside to keep clean. But it is missing a lot of useful info. Where is the best place to get a FSM?

Well said turboGus. I have 3 manuals (chilton's. haynes, clymers), the 84-86 factory service manual (fsm) saved on my 'puter, another Mopar book on tricking out the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline, a copy of the T-4 & T-5 Transmission . manual, and the 72-86 CJ rebuilders guide. Not to mention misc. info I've printed out for future reference. But they're all at home in my garage.
While at work my mind can't help but think about fix'n the Jeep so that's when the majority of questions seem to come up. I spend too much time as it is on these forums reading and drooling, and sometimes answering questions when I can. I don't always have the time to do an in depth search either.
But no manual that I have can beat the knowledge you will find on these forums and no manual will include the level of detail and discussion on a particular issue, or include color pictures with it.
I thought I knew a lot about Jeeps, having owned 3 of them, one for over 30 years. But reading some of the threads and info available online, I am humbled.
So while some questions are repetitious and basic, many more are not. I'll live with the bad to keep the good. :chug:

Are any of these available online for download?
http://www.amazon.com/Jeep-Rebuilde...0370/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1336513813&sr=8-4

Amazon.com: Jeep Cj Rebuilder's Manual, 1972-1986: Mechanical Restoration, Unit Repair and Overhaul Performance Upgrades for Jeep Cj-5, Cj-6, Cj-7, and Cj-8/Scrambler (9780837601519): Moses Ludel: Books

My uncle restores 1955-1957 chevys
his manuals are full of hand written notes and has people calling him all the way from Finland to japan for advice ( he is not really internet saavy)

so sometimes getting that "hey how did you do this " or "what is this?"is not in the index of the manuals
1 question will be asked and asked and asked.....but there are guys here that will answer with no problem

I am a Locksmith and have torn down 1000s of columns but couldnt tell you the first thing about the Dana 20 or T-15
but some here cannot only tell me but tell me in a way that I can understand......even though I agree with having manuals sometimes having that 1 person to explain what the :censored: you just read.....Is a good thing

that last one hasn't worked since 2009...Time to update the bookmarks...
