Hello, I'm new here as a member, but before joining I read everything I could find on multiple sites before registering so I can ask a question I just can't find an answer for....

My 73 CJ5 that I just bought has non-functioning turn signals and brake lights. Also when I turn the headlights on and try to get the dome light to come on, thats the only time I get any dash lights, and they are a mix (right turn signal indicator on, low amp warning on, backlights to hvac controls on, all others dark). The turn signal mechanism looks to be original and is in bad shape, as is the wiring for it under the dash. I found the original wiring diagram, and Im going to rewire the entire dash. Im replacing the headlight switch and am going to replace the signal switch with a signal-stat 900. Problem is the wiring diagram shows wiring the switch straight to the lights, but the original wiring diagram shows the wires going from the turn signal switch to the hazard switch and then to the appropriate lights. any help on this? Thanks
Shane

I would first look for any wiring issue that a PO could have done.
The dome light deal is what makes me say this.;)
The other is to be sure you have a good ground(GND)continuity throughout the Jeep's engine, frame and body.
One of the biggest wiring issues on these old CJ's are GND issues.

I would suggest you get one of these. Helped me a lot. colorwiringdiagrams.com

Thanks for that. It may very well have a bad ground, but considering there are a lot of bare/rotted wires behind the dash, and when it rains water goes from outside the windshield to behind the dash, I am wanting to rewire everything, as well as replace the very mangled turn signal assembly, and try to seal up the windshield assembly while Im at it.

The question I have, is since I intend to use the Signal Stat 900 turn signal, do I wire it through the factory hazard switch in accordance with the original wiring, or will I bypass it somehow since the s900 has its own hazard switch. This mac wiring is unlike any car Ive ever worked on, very strange.

Shane, I would be interested in buying your old turn signal unit for parts if it becomes surplus. Thanks and good luck on the wiring.Sounds like it may be terminal. If you are real sharp on wiring the stock wiring could be rebuilt/repaired or use one of the wiring kits. mike

Are the original signals rebuildable?

Are the original signals rebuildable?

I have been able to do some repair on a couple of switches. Your '73 should have the "SPARTON" switch. If you are wanting to keep your jeep original you can probably find a good used switch. I sold a complete steering column w/ steering wheel and switch this summer at a swap meet.
So they are out there .Try E-bay or 4x4 swap meets. A simple diagnosis with a ohm meter will tell you if the switch is working. mike

Thanks of rate info. The switch is a Spartan. it feels like all the internals are broken. I wouldn't mind rebuilding it if I could find a kit to do so.
