77' CJ-5, 360 c.i. motor, T-176 trans, D-300 transfer case w\ twin sticks, Dana 30 front, A.M.C. 20 rear w/ 4.10's, solid axles & trac-lok, 2.5" lift Y.J. springs.
The other day I'm cruisin' down the beach road when this kid in an old P.O.S. Acura pulls up behind me and proceeds to tailgate me and rev his little four banger all over the place. Now usually this just prompts me to slow down, which I did, and this seemed to anger him in the worst way, and after pulling up to a red light, the horn honking and hollering started. First impulse- beat the snot out of him, second impulse- smokey burnout. I opted for the second, and luckily did not break anything doing so. Stupid move I know- 32's are not meant to spin on dry pavement, but it made me feel better for a moment. What I did notice was that the rear of my jeep drifted about 6" left while the tires were spinning, which led me to believe I lit em both. Was there an L.S.D. stock or optional on my year Jeep? I've looked for the casting letter on the diff. and can't find it, is there another way to tell without pulling the cover off?

Thanks for any info- and yes, I'll look into anger management classes:D

Damn punks... anyway put a floor jack under the diff and jack up both tires. Put it in first gear then try to spin one tire by hand (with the engine off).
if the other tire spins in the opposite direction then its an open diff. If you cant spin the tire or it feels like a ratchet then you just might have a locker:cool:

I am running down the road the other day in my Crossfire when this ricky racer pulls up next to me in his Subaru with a huge double fin higher than his roof top on the car. Girlfriend in passenger seat. He keeps wanting me to race him so when we get to a stop light I push the traction control turn off button, drop it out of drive to first and wait. speed rev with foot on brake then release at first hint of green , chirping tires as I leave, shifting up twice and shut her down slowing down as I wait for him to pull up, he tries to pass as I get in it again and match speed and pass leaving him in the rear view. As I once again slow down to regular speed he goes past and about 1/2 a mile later pulls into the same station I was headed to. While filling up his girlfriend comes over to check out my car. As we talk and she finds out it has a Mercedes drive line she keeps shaking her head, then informs me the guy she is out on a first date with has a 4 banger in there and talks about being the fastest driver on the road, he had told her I had a poser car with a 4 banger before I took off and smoked him. she also asked for a ride home. Seems he was being a jerk because he had gotten smoked. I told her I did not want to start trouble. As I left she was on the phone to one of her friends trying to get a ride.
Anyway I just cannot understand guys like that, yours wanting to drag a jeep, I mean a vehicle not designed to go fast, and my idiot trying to drag something he knew nothing about.

My dads 76 has a 401:drool: in it and we rebuilt the tranny and regeared it for dd/ weekend warrior and she doenst see any off roading.(he has another 5 for that) any way my buddy gets beside us on the highway at about 55 in his 77 stingray and start pullin beside us. so dad drops it in second and we left him sittin with his chin on his lap. he then follows us to the house and says " i never saw that comin" he has wanted a jeep ever since then and actually sold the stingray for a truck.

And last my daily drive is a 03 Mach 1 (4.6 4V dohc) and i get ricer tryin to race all the time because they think its just a GT but lil do they know... 03 GT only made about 220 to the flywheel 03 mach made 315 and after my mods im about 330 maybe 350 havent dynod her yet.

Still i would have done the same to the punk at the light lol. also like the idea of parkin on his hood as well!
 
Always liked to say - hell ya we'll race when some smart :censored: wanted to race my CJ. I always for pink slips, once through the quarter and once in the mud. Average the times and the lowest time wins. :) Usually shut em' up pretty fast.
 
Whwen i would get people wanting to race me in my TJ, I would tell them to name the time, I would name the place. It took some thinking on their part, but most never figured out that a mustang will not go very fast, or far in the soft sand in North Carolina.

An LSD would have been optional and unless the PO had replaced the unit most likely it would not still be functioning.

You will need a wire brush and a light to see the code stamped on the diff housing as the code stamp will not be very deep. The code will also tell you the gear ratio.

I know a guy who took a Mail Jeep and worked like a dog getting in a 454 / turbo400/ 9inch and used to smoke guys in the quarter. I am from a town that had an Air Base by it so he always had a new flock of Air Men who thought their small blocks were the baddest. Would be a fun project for sure but the steering is way scary.

I have smoked a few vehicles before but most ricers won't mess with me because they hear rumble of my series 40's flowmasters before I get a chance. My motor sounds mean just idling. I did race a Dakota rt one time across a bridge and suprised the he'll out of him when we hit 100 he still was not gaining on me.
 
ya, mine sounds pretty mean too- well lets just say I know every car in my area with an alarm on it. On this island we have a large Asian population, and as soon as they are old enough to inherit their mom's 4 door civic they put a megaphone echo tip on the muffler and think they have a drag car. SHEESH- :D

to fill the space the muffler was in. Now when I roll up to a
light they don't even try. Plus I like the low rumble the 2.75"
stock pipe has now.

They usta do that with my mach 1. that was untill i did longtubes and removed the cats great sound. lol
