- Street Jeep for snow and ice, still on blocks in the driveway. '73 CJ5, 258 inline six, T18 tranny, Model 20 transfer case, Dana 30/44 w/ 4.27 ratio (soon to be 3.73), original Cutlas hubs, half-cab waiting to be installed. Daily driver is a 20-year-old Mazda pickup.
A few months ago I'd had it with my computerized electronic '92 Mazda pickup and decided to find a pre-'80 (no computer) vehicle I could work on and depend upon. It so happened that I stumbled across my '72 CJ5 that needed just a little work to be back on the road. I anticipated rebuilding the brakes and carburetor, and completing the wiring to the headlights and wipers.
So I have the new brake cylinders and shocks, but also have anti-sway bars to install and 2" lowering blocks to fabricate. But first I guess I need to replace the 4.27 gearing with 3.73. And then there are the new seats, the YJ windshield, and the half-cab to bolt together. (Not that there was anything wrong with the old seats or windshield.) A new/used rear bumper to customize and fasten. The "project" has gone from simple and low-dollar to, well, kind of consuming.
So is this a personal failing on my part, or is there something about these plain jane vehicles that softens men's brains?
