Street Jeep for snow and ice, still on blocks in the driveway. '73 CJ5, 258 inline six, T18 tranny, Model 20 transfer case, Dana 30/44 w/ 4.27 ratio (soon to be 3.73), original Cutlas hubs, half-cab waiting to be installed. Daily driver is a 20-year-old Mazda pickup.
A few months ago I'd had it with my computerized electronic '92 Mazda pickup and decided to find a pre-'80 (no computer) vehicle I could work on and depend upon. It so happened that I stumbled across my '72 CJ5 that needed just a little work to be back on the road. I anticipated rebuilding the brakes and carburetor, and completing the wiring to the headlights and wipers.

So I have the new brake cylinders and shocks, but also have anti-sway bars to install and 2" lowering blocks to fabricate. But first I guess I need to replace the 4.27 gearing with 3.73. And then there are the new seats, the YJ windshield, and the half-cab to bolt together. (Not that there was anything wrong with the old seats or windshield.) A new/used rear bumper to customize and fasten. The "project" has gone from simple and low-dollar to, well, kind of consuming.

So is this a personal failing on my part, or is there something about these plain jane vehicles that softens men's brains?

Honest answer... On this site you are 180 degrees off!

BUT! I would be happy to help you work out a plan to meet your goal... :)

I think I feel my brain softening

Heh--yup. I realize that you guys are tolerating me despite my "Praise the Lowered" attitude. Problem is, my building plans are far exceeding my original goal. My initial goal was cheap and simple. What's happening is "Hey, I could do this..."

My 73 came With 4.27s OEM. The first time I hit the highway I thought the clutch had to be slipping with the stock H78 Goodyears. 31 inch tires would drop the rpm. And the lowering blocks would put it back to stock ride height . . . :D

:agree:When I got my jeep I had no plans to spend all my money on it, but here I am 10 years later still spending all my money on it. It's been alot of fun though and I have no regets.

I keep resisting the urge myself to get too far into "Well, since I have it all apart anyway...". I had a plan from the get go to restore my 1980. I have seen some pretty cool things in the last 3 months you CAN do with a jeep, it's pretty easy to let the list get long.

I can see where the changes you are doing will fit your purposes. Just keep the course, jeeps are easy to take apart and mod later!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

welcome to the path to enlightenment.:D

It's true. I was happy with my well working T-5 , but now I find myself scanning Craigslist every day looking for a T-176 ...

I was unaware that any of this was a problem.

I have a 75 CJ5 with a AMC 304 . Tried to start and just clicked so of course I assumed selonid.. wrong. ran a few electrical test and I am now stumped. When I run a volt test between the starter cable and the positive battery terminal I get 12.78 volts. i should not get any volts this is the power cable and shold not be grounded. I swaped starters to see if there was a problem with the starter even though it tested good. Any ideas????

Good luck with your build---mine started out as tune-up and brake job:rolleyes:
Now a year and $$$$$$ later still not done:eek:
Hahaha--just how mine started out! Spent a lazy errand-running day today with my sweetie. At one point she asked, "When do you think you'll have your Jeep running?" (When we were looking at it prior to purchase I'd estimated a couple weeks.)

lol welcome to the disease its a wonderful thing :chug:

yea once you replace one thing it leads to the next thing , I started out putting air in the rear tire that was low , that lead to new tires which lead to new brakes which lead to new seals and bearings and then gear oil then universals then the front end components and new leaf spring poly bushings then what the hell pull the tub and fix the rust areas and paint it an rebuild engine an tranny , all over needing 32psi in a tire , dang what the hell was I thinking should have put the spare on an kept driving
