Ok guys,
Today for my saturday project was to replace my fuel and temp gauges on my 1982 CJ7 .
I pull the cluster out and got it all apart ( a lot simpler then i thought :)). I replaced the inop fuel and temp gauge and get it put all back together plug the gauge cluter lights back in and the speedometer needle back in. I put it back in place but do put the mounting hdwr back on yet( wanna do a power on check before mounting it) as soon as I turn power on I see smoke :censored::mad::censored::censored::censored: then  because Im "like what did I do wrong ?" and how did i short it out ???? :censored::censored:.
So now my Cj's sitting with no cluster installed and my gauges are paper weights.
Because I live on a Island Im screwed because I have to get them over-nighted in :censored::censored::censored:

1)So guys what did i do wrong ?

2)Also would making a ground wire for each of the gauges (fuel and water temp) better then using a common ground for both ?

i would try them again with the ground. Sometimes you just burn off little insulation I have many smoked gauge that still work. depends how long you let them cook.
