Hey guys I'm a greenhorn with Jeeps and this question will probably prove it.

I have a '76 CJ5 with no spare tire mount. The tailgate is 'openable'. Does a CJ5 ever use a 'swing gate' type of mount? I just can't see how this Jeep used one of those mounting brackets.

I would like to install the swing type of tire mounts, is this common/possible?

Thanks for any input guys. Newbie out.

There are a bunch of carriers out there. You would probably need to get a bumper to go along with it, unless your current bumper used to have one on it. If you like your current bumper, I think they sell a kit that you could add it to your bumper. Welding would be required. Do a google image search and find one you like and go for it.

Oh, didn't know that was done off the bumper, ill look it up right now. Thanks buddy.

Newer jeeps had/have them mounted to the body. Over sized tires and offroading will break those mounts so the aftermarket went to the bumper. The beefy ones will use a spindle and bearings.

I've been doing some research on this, and I am finding that it might be better to use a 3/4" or larger grade 8 bolt held in a double shear mount rather than a spindle setup. Seems the spindle gets fatigued around the weld areas, and can break off going down the road or trail. I'll post some links after dinner.

Hey thanks for the replies and links. Gonna weld up an upside down v and anchor it to the welded in toolbox in the bed. Was hoping to go OEM on it but too much trouble and expensive.

OEM was mounted on the passengers side just behind the rear wheel well. Kind or in the way and when you run wider tires it drags the spare on the rear wheel.

Welded in tool box? can we have some pictures of this machine of yours?

Wow. THAT'S a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Whatever I come up with, I'm going to put a safety chain on it, probably through the mag holes or weld up a round head onto a chain and seat it through an opening in the wheel.

Thanks for the input guys.
