1973 cj5, 304 not sure of the rest
hi guys, i have a 1973 CJ5 with a AMC 304 , while driving in the summer time the jeep is strong and never spits or sputters at all, runs smooth. its a fair day driver as it has no top, just a bikini top. started it up today and yes its cool outside, but let it warm up and took it down the road to a lot of spitting and sputtering. it has new plugs and wires, new dist cap and rotor. what could be making it do that, do i need to change out my coil, it does look old but hate to replace just to be replacing.
thanks for any and all input.
jeep on.

Make sure your choke is opening up all the way.

X2 on checking the choke. Start with the easy things first. :D

When I was still in the north country this time of year it was common to get a little water in the gas tank. We used "dry gas" to remove the water, do they even make "dry gas" anymore? Maybe gas tanks don't sweat like they used to, really with sealed tanks they actually might not, but what about the underground tanks at the gas station? Just a thought ..... water in the tank can quickly turn into ice in the gas line, at least it did when I was growing up.

Heat gas treatment does the same thing.

different name same stuff...?

I think this new gas has enough alcohol in it to start with. :D

If the gas has gone bad it will smell real bad and running it tru your motor can gum up the valves so bad they will no long open and bend push rods. Ask me how I know any way it would need to be drained and replaced.

could it be that the gas is just not good any more, would adding fuel treatment help?

Another thing is water in the system, from condensation or a previous fill up. Water does not burn to good of course, but there are additives for that.
