I just bought ‘83 CJ7 with unknown lift Thinking about YJ spring swap.

Was just grabbing some measurements…..is it normal to have 2” wide front spring and 2-1/2” rear spring?

Also, the rear shackle hanger does not look like those I see with the width offset from frame.

Check the hangers also. 2 or 3 on mine were cracked and broken and I was the original owner. To me they are very brittle . Your looks original to me.

Yep, different year CJs have different spring widths.

Do you want a better ride or a better off-road time?
This is my 4th jeep, first CJ. I want a better ride, the only wheeling will be riding on beach sand.

I’m thinking going down to 2–1/2” OME YJ. Been following the Manic Mechanic thread. I think existing is a 4”.

Right now it is allover the road…

Great looking CJ.
As you stated, the ride is the most important. Definitely go with the YJ OME spring system.
Our 40+ year old Jeeps were not built for comfort.

Cant go wrong with OME and is the route I chose. I've heard BDS is good riding as well. 33's might rub some on a 2 1/2" lift though, that's the only drawback to OME. If you don't off-road much or just do light trails it should be ok.

I"m building a parts list now, looking at some kits. I think it's funny how suspension always gets the first look, at least that's how my brain works.

Have to go through a bunch of other stuff as well, Transmission first; 5-speed and it pops out of 2/3/4. Broken electric fan, brakes, general fluids and service, clean-up wiring. You know, 40 year old jeep stuff.
