Hello all,

I've got an 80 CJ7 with the mighty Iron Duke/SR4 combo.

The tranny has started giving me a really loud whine in 2nd and 3rd gear, especially 3rd. It shuts up entirely in 4th, and is within normal noise in 1st. I'm by no means a Transmission guru, so I'm looking for an idea of what I'm going to need to replace and/or rebuild here, or how to track down the exact gremlin (I'd hate to tear into this thing if I don't have to).

I know that I'm going to hear "dump the SR4 ", but I'm not into that. For starters, I want to keep this one as close to factory as possible (It made it almost 33 years - it can't be THAT bad of a tranny) and second, I really don't have the budget to be screwing with driveline changes and the like.

The oil was good, no water emulsion or significant chunks in it, and it still shifts fine.

Since toss that turd is not an option... Pull it and take it to a shop that will rebuild it for you. My local Transmission shop will do a bench rebuild for around $750 as long as its not covered in :dung: and doesnt have broken, rusted or other wise shot internals. if its whining it sounds like a bearing issue.

Good luck with it.

No local shops around here. Come to think of it, I doubt there's one within 4 hours of here.

I'm pretty much consigned to the fact that I'll be doing this myself, and since I've done plenty of conveyor and crusher gearbox work I'm not too concerned about anything outside of ordering parts. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I might need in advance.

Like I said, it made it 32 years and change before it had a hiccup, so it can't be that much of a turd. The NV4500 in my old GMC only made it to 50k before it spit a bearing.

Sounds to me like you need replacement bearings for the mainshaft on your Transmission . May as well replace the synchros as well. Heres a blow up diagram of what youll see.

yeah I was thinking input shaft bearing... My T-15 blue the input ball bearing seal (big balls) and actually lost one out of it... drove that way for a while, supprised my gears were not toast!

I'd pull it and look at everything inside... probably see what your problem is from the inspection plate.

Thanks for the help. I just ordered the master overhaul kit and see if I can't get another 32 years out of it. May as well switch over to synthetic when it is done too.

I was expecting the overhaul kit to cost a hell of a lot more than the $110 that it actually did, so I'm happy on that front.

Does anyone know of a rebuild manual or where I might find one? A quick internet search didn't come up with anything useful.

If you bought the overhaul kit from Novak it usually includes a pretty good set of instructions.
