Electrical Stalled after excessive idle and now won't start, HEI failure..?
New member, 6 months into the adventure of owning my first CJ7...
While driving around town the magic words were said (It's running better than ever) and then I stopped at a store, left the jeep running, and got held up for 15-20 minutes... After I finally got back and started driving for about 30sec-1minute, it stalled and wouldn't re-fire... Had to get it towed home. (The CJ resides in south Florida, it was around 88F with 85% humidity)
- It was converted to an electric fuel pump, so I was able to cycle fuel through the dual outlet filter after it stalled in hopes it was just vapor lock.
- Opened the carb and verified there was fuel in the bowl, cycled throttle and verified jets were letting fuel .
- Had spare plugs, so I swapped those in case any happened to foul.
None of those worked so I put up the white flag and had it towed.
Once home:
The battery was still showing 12v, but I hooked it up to charger anyway because of excessive cranking, after charging completed it still wouldn't start.
I verified distributor was receiving voltage, still wouldn't start.
- Could the DUI HEI module overheat/fail because of high underhood temps from idling that long? (Fan is mechanical)
- Even though the radiator did not show signs of overheating, could idling for 20 minutes cause a failure like this?
I'm stumped, any advice on where to check next is welcome and appreciated. TY
