starter problem

i have a 78 CJ7 with a AMC 304 engine. my starter suddenly will not disengage. have new ignition switch,new solenoid. and new starter. what could be causing this

A wiring error, does anything happen when you engage the starter switch?

I have a jeep CJ7 78 as well and had the exact opposite problem tonight. Mine wouldn't engage. Turn the key ... nothing. So I pulled my hitch out and rapped it like a hammer. Wahh laa.... engaged straight away

I had a starter fil once where the bendix would not disengage as you speak of(however you have a "new one") it still could fail , you might loosen the bolts on the starter to see if it releases as if somehow the starter is stuck to the fly wheel. other than that I agree that it would be a wiring issue from there

when you turn the key do you fell the spring back part at the start position?

loosen the ignition switch on the column to make sure in correct position.

disconnect the rod and push down where the rod was to start
that will tell you if any thing above the ignition may have problems

also double check the solenoid wiring

tried to backtrac to eliminate problem i disconnected starter switch from steering colum and operated by hand .have starter out and clamped to frame but no matter what i do the starter will not disengage

Sounds like the starter gear is jammed.
