I'm having a starter problem on my Dauntless Buick 225 V6 V6. I keep burning up the wire from ignition S post to the starter S post. I have nothing connected to the R post on starter. What am I missing?? Someone said I need a starter relay connected to the R post. Where can I get this relay if I do need one? Thanks foryour help!!

Sounds like a short in the starter to me. Probably not in the starter itself, but in the part that engages the gear. Possibly the .... wait .... does your jeep have a starter solenoid? Is it on the starter itself?

It has a solenoid mounted on top of the starter. I'm going to try changing it.
Thanks!

take it to the parts store they can test it for free and tell you if its bad :chug:

Exactly, try not to just swap parts if it is at all possible. Remove the starter and bring it to the parts store for them to test. Burning up wiring means there is a short in there somewhere. If you are not burning up your cable it is likely not in the starter itself, but you never can tell. Also if you don't have a rebuilder in your town you might not be able to get just a solenoid for a starter mounted unit. Also, it is possible that your solenoid is sticking, creating the draw, but a sticking solenoid means a running starter. Starters don't like to run that long AND at the RPM's your engine is turning. I.E. bad starter as well.

Do you have a Delco or Prestolite starter?

Not sure ,but I have not heard of a prestolite starter on a Dauntless Buick 225 V6 v6.
Of course I haven't seen everything yet either. ha ha ha .If it where me I would go buy a rebuild starter w/solenoid just for insurance. Where not talking a lot of money. This is a garden variety Delco starter found on most 1960-70's chev,GM vehicles. Then double check that wire from ign to sol.
End of story.

The pestolite stater in a V6 is identical in appearance to the F4 starter except for the pinion housing.

Both starters are interchangeable. However, some factory wiring came with a light blue 16g starter wire, others came with a purple 12g wire. If the OP has a light blue 16g wire and upgraded his starter he should then swap to the 12g ignition starter wire.
