Can someone tell me the purpose of this new fad in bumpers?
All the young jeepers are putting these on.
From a practicle standpoint, I can see no useful purpose.

I think it's a fad that will die.
Some stingers look like they could part the brush as you blaze a trail but you shouldn't blaze a trail - stay the trail.
Some say they protect the hood in a roll over. If you really wanted to protect your hood you should keep the bars closer to the hood and and shape it more like the grill.
Some use the stinger as a place to hook the winch cable. I say that's an over elaborate contraption to hold your winch cable.
I say it's just a fad.

I have always thought they were a product of the desert racer trucks that would help slide across the top of something, rocks, sand, Honda's, mustangs, whatever. but have also always thought that I would not give it more thought than that.:D

The big elongated stingers I think are a fad, not sure.

I think what I have is more of a hood/winch guard as it is small and tucked in.

Have bounced a few items off it at our local parks (like large branches on designated trails). With a fiberglass hood, rather bump the 'stinger' rather than the 'glass.

The big ones like in Busa's 1st pick are suppose to stop you from pitch polling your jeep coming down a steep incline. At least that's the idea.;)

Seems like this same question was answered a while back...
The purpose of the stinger is to provide an elevated attachment point at the nose of the jeep in certain climbing situations. During these situations, the COG is moved considerably with the nose of the jeep in the air. By attaching a strap, a spotter can help control the tendency of the vehicle to want to nose-up...thereby providing traction to the frontend and keeping the vehicle more stable.
Those that have been to Moab can appreciate the use of a well designed stinger...especially in places like Mickeys Hot tub ;)

Hey I'm gonna see if I can revive this a little.

Like above, I've seen these stingers around, but I haven't heard, seen any designs, or how to design them. Are there degrees that the bars need to be at to provide the optinum preformance. I'd like to have one, but can one be made to be removable as well? or is that just asking for troble?

only reason I ask is, most of the areas I would go to I wouldn't really need it, but it would be nice to have it on in some situations, but be able to take it off afterward

thanks for the time and help.:notworthy:

I would think it would have to be angled depending on your intended use, unless it's like most and just for looks, then it doesn't matter. If it's for rock climbing as was said above, you'd want it's tip high up. If it's for traversing glaciers and it's to prevent being swallowed by a crevice (sounds like krev-asz), you'd want it longer and low. Same if it's for a baja pre-runner and it's to recover from nose dives.

I don't see why it couldn't be made removable if it's slipped inside of a short, larger tube that's welded to the mount, and then bolted thru.

But to the original poster, I agree. It's a fade for youngn's. I hear they're actually illegal in some states due to accidents.

thanks,

i don't think i would keep it on all the time, just when i would go out only on that one or two times. plus ive got a bunch of friends that i could aquire some tubing from to make a simple one.

PaR....
thx again.

I don't know if removable would affect strength much, but if I wanted one that would be the way I would go too. I have read they make it a pain to get under the hood when you have to work on (sure does look like it). But I guess since we drive one of the most reliable vehicles there is, we shouldn't really have that concern

So is reliable what they call it when ur constantly changing or upgrading the beast

stingers have been around for a long time. At least out here and you see them popular one year and not the next, at least they look better than tube bumpers

at least they look better than tube bumpers
That's highly debatable. I think the old Hobrect tubes, or even the Olympic Defender tubes looked much better.

ok, but I have to inform you that my opinion is far superior to yours in my mind, but then you probably find that hard to swallow.:chug:

and Baja is a legend, in his own mind.:D

Life would be boring if we all liked the same things.
Every cj would look the same.:(

An interesting thread, I didn't even realize they had a real purpose beyond running dunes.. I can't decide if I like them or not, but I'd like to see some picks with them being used in rock climbing situations.. anyone??

I can't say for sure that there could be a problem with the legality of a stinger but I saw a guy stopped on the tollway here in Dallas, a state trooper was pointing and shaking his head and the driver was standing , hands on hips, looking a bit put out. I have not seen him on the tollway again but that could be total coincidence.

My "tube bumper", which I consider quite stylish:poke:, has a forward leaning projection, it just doesn't stick out 3 feet. If I have any encounters with Texas finest I will be sure to let you all know.

Nope, I fully understand that logic. That's why my Jeep is the best lookin' Jeep in all the land.:D
