Is this a Test?
:)Looks kinda like one...........if the boot was off and could see the Transmission top maybe? tough to tell, crawl under it.

Was looking at it off an Ebay ad. Called the number and they have no idea. Its from a dealership. Hes supposed to drive it around the parking lot tommorow and let me know. He says he knows what a Granny gear is.

Shouldve added that nothing matches up with this Jeep. Its an 85 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 8 cylinder. :D

Pics confirm its an 8 cylinder AMC though. Looks like a decent Yj tub swap as well. Ebay ad from a dealership.

Well that old crooked stick is pretty normal looking for a T-18 ..........but I guess it could be allmost anything .............after market they ship them straight so you can put the bends in for your own application.......

Good Luck!

That shifter doesn't look right to be a T-18 , at least it doesn't look like mine. But the last year that a T-18 was installed was '79, I think, and the last year for a V8 was '81. So, yeah, that engine/tranny combo could be out of anything. I think you're wrong on the YJ tub though, I think that's a CJ7 tub.

Anyway, I decoded the VIN for you, because I'm a little bored tonight icon_smile_lam.webp

I think you are right about it being a YJ tub but I can't help with what Transmission it has.

The first picture below is a 1977 CJ T-18 . Notice how the bends are sharp. The shifter in Petescj’s picture shows that the lower bend is a little more of a softer curve than the known CJ T-18 and the upper ones aren’t the same. (But really who says all shifters are created equal.) However the second picture is also the shifter of a T-18 . I’m really not sure of its exact lineage/history but it is a 6.32 low T-18 with a CJ T-18 front bolt pattern (not Ford butterfly) and the Dana 20 Transfer Case adaptor plate and rear output shaft but the front shaft is same as the Ford T-18 . Humm…. I picked it up because I got it and the Dana 20 Transfer Case for $50; just couldn’t pass on the deal.

This is what my Ford T-18 shifter looks like. I will get you an installed picture latter.

It's an SM420 (driverside, pto)

Look at the under Jeep pics and you'll see a driver side PTO port cover plate. T-18 have them on the passenger side.

Hope this helps.

:)
Borg Warner T-18 ........Ford version.......right side PTO Port ( Pass.)
Borg Warner T-18 ........ Jeep Version..... Left side PTO Port (Drive)
Borg Warner T-19...............................PTO port on both sides.

Still looks like a Jeep version Borg Warner T-18

That would be quite acceptable as well. I called back today but had to leave a voicemail. If that is a SM420 Im prepared to bid more. How sure are you its a SM420? :)

I believe its a Yj tub by the squared flares and missing body mount . Thats the one that has to be relocated.

Hmm. The SM420 would need an adapter plate for the AMC V-8. The Cj version of the T-18 doesnt have the 6.32 1st gear. The V-8 couldve come out of a J-truck.

What a conundrum. Its about 5 hrs away and being its at a dealership they dont know what their looking at. :bang:

I've rebuilt enough Jeep T-18s and own 2 presently, the port is on the driver side

Both the sm420 and Jeep T-18 have adapters and driver side covers however, more likely it's a T-18

:)That is a real Problem that is well know amounst anyone using the Jeep Version T-18 or early T-86 which had the left side PTO cover.........I still would almost say that seems to be a T-18 Jeep version as the location of the shifter seems to be in the correct location......and The Jeep versions did have the 6.32:1 low Gear:D

Ask them where reverse is,

Sm420 towards you and down
CJ T-18 71- 76 ½ over and up 4.02
CJ T-18 76 -78 over and up 6.32 first gear
CJ T-18 79 and FSJ over and down 6.32 first gear
