I have a T-18 tranny matched up with a 360. The po swore the tranny was original, but thats not the case. How do I go about ordering synchros for the tranny without knowing what it came from?

If the third character in your VIN is an M it means that your CJ came stock with a T18, if it is a F then it was a 3 speed. The 360 of course is not stock. If the eight character is a H then it came with a 304, an A, B, E or F then it was an I-6, 258 or 232.

Although the input shafts varied in lengths the innards were for the most part pretty much the same.........1st&2nd synchros never changed from 65-79 ....3rd&4th gear synchros changed from the early T-98 version in 65-68 to a little different version in about 1972...........record your case casting numbers and reverse location and call someone like Novak or Advanced adapters or others on line..........If your breaking it down that far a complete rebuild kit with seals & bearings would be a good Idea.

Tell you what, I'm a nice fellow, I'll get you the stock AMC 304 with T-15 and take that 360 / T-18 combo off your hands

In all seriousness they're ^^ both right. As tarry said, you should be able to get a hold of someone where ever that knows the right part numbers and hhow to differenciate. The local parts houses that need year make and model, may not be of much help to you. You can look up which donner vehicle to tell them, and figure that out from novaks site possible.

Fine which version you have and then you'll know what to "tell them" you have.

It came stock with a AMC 304 3 spd. Since the Po thought it was factory I talk to some local guys that are big cjs and they said that the tranny could have been installed at the dealership. I'm doing a complete ground up resto. So the tranny is just sitting on the rolling chasis. Where would any numbers be on the Transmission .

Go on Novaks web site as mentioned above and get educated.........Large Casting numbers on the side of the case starting with #13. The good news is it came out of a running vehicle so you don't need any adapters.......as I mentioned the inners are pretty much the same short of gear ratio changes.The Bearings and seals were standard and only the synchronizer block was different in the early years.............Call Novak with the casting numbers and they should be able to fix you up with parts.
