I'm going to be parting ways with my T-5 before it has a chance to let me down, and in it's place will be a freshly rebuilt (by me) 5-1 first gear ratio T19. The search for this particular Transmission was harder than first expected since it was only produced for a 2-3 year span, but perseverance paid off. Then the nice folks at Novak sent me an adapter and rebuild kit last week, so this past weekend was the perfect time to tear into it!

By the end of Saturday I had all the gears back in it and ready for the adapter

A couple hours on Sunday had it all buttoned up and ready for whatever snappy color of paint I pick for it (leaning towards a light blue).
Next up, pull T-5 and Transfer Case . I have a set of Lo-Max 4-1 gears for the Transfer Case too, however, minor knee surgery this week will push that back until August sometime :( . Hopefully then I can get the rest done and back in the 8 by early-mid September so I have some road time to make sure all is well before our 4 day trip to Panamint Valley in late October :D

Well, Transmission is done, now its time for the Transfer Case .

Went with Chrysler Blue only because it will show leaks pretty easy.

On to the Transfer Case

Gotta love the lift! My buddy has one at his place, sure makes easy work of swapping stuff.

Now comes the rebuild with the 4-1 LoMax kit

You will love the 4:1 t'case. I sure do mine.
Bet that iron case tranny is a heavy SOB--LOL
When your done-Your gonna have to learn to drive the Jeep all over again :D
What R&P ratio are you run'n?
Please keep us posted-

LG, at 145lbs that Transmission is a beast  For the foreseeable future, I plan on keeping the 2:73's. If I did the math correctly I'm running +/- 2000 rpm at 60-65 in 4th on the T-5 , so I'm not losing much on the top end but gaining much on the low end with the swap. As it is now I can rarely use 5th when she's loaded up for a desert trip anyways. With any luck the Jeep Gods will smile down on me this weekend so I can get the Transfer Case rebuilt ;)

Those gears in the T-19 look in good shape!
Well done
Hope for a speedy recovery on the knee

Thanks Posi, within a week after the surgery I already had more range of motion out of it than before, had a great Orthopedist. Sadly, he past away 4 days after he did my knee of a massive heart attack :(.
I lucked out on the Transmission , reverse was the only gear with any kind of damage on it. I snapped a pic of the worst chipped gear and sent it off to the guys at Novak. They told me it wasnt too bad and that since it was on the rounded end I could just take a dremel and smooth off the rough/chipped edges and it would be fine.

Got home early from work and started to tear into the Transfer Case

I'll try and get home early again so I can press the rest apart and start cleaning everything up :D

While you are at it could you post some pics of the new gearset? Years ago, I sent my Transfer Case off to a local gearshop for the conversion and never saw what they looked like.

Thanks for posting the high res pics. I'm shopping for a T-18 myself and, not having ever torn apart a Transmission I'm going to need all the help I can get. Most likely there'll be issues with such an old but venerable Transmission .

Turbogus, it had been 25 years since last tearing a Transmission apart, so I was a little nervous to start. I took everything apart slowly, trying to make a mental note of things, and laid everything I took apart in order on the bench. A big help for assembly was

I had read somewhere that putting the assembly lube in the freezer for an hour before you need it helped, but it made the stuff too hard and unworkable until it thawed out. I also found that most of the exploded view diagrams, including the one from Novak, are of a T-18 . Good luck on your search :chug:

Nice job. I really need to get back in the garage. I'm fighting with my power steering system now, last thing to replace is the gearbox itself. Then I have the Transmission swap. Hopefully I can get my Lomax set in over Winter.

Well went out to the other yard and they had one that was mis shelved. Turned out we looked in the region it was while we were waiting for help, but I didn't recognise it being hooked up to a Ford Transfer Case . Having arrived just when they took a lunch delivery of pizza my buddie and I scrounged through the yard and found a candidate (2wd) still in the truck. I'm thinking of holding out for one that's already pulled.

Yesterday I finally was able to press off the shafts out of the case, grind the notch and clean the case for re-assembly.

Then get some of the new gears and bearings pressed unto their shafts/housings. This ended up taking more time than I would have imagined because while working on the case and its pieces, it is backwards/upside down from the exploded diagram. I found myself stopping and quadruple checking everything I did, but I did manage to get some stuff put together and ready to assemble later today. Luckily, todays job canceled on me so I can finish putting it together. It will also make my wife very happy because she'd like to do some laundry

:)
This is what you want............and yes put it in the freezer ..........stays firm and sticky for those needle bearings on both the tranny and Transfer Case . Totally blends in with any oils once running......

:)
That T-19 5:1 ratio low gear is a great Transmission with the Conical cut gears in both 1st and Reverse along with the addition of a 1st gear Syncro..............

Not as popular as the T-18 with it's more easy to find 6.32:1 low gear but perhaps the 18's popularity over the lessor known T-19 is more so because of the 19's Limited production numbers............

With the 5:1 ratio low gear and the 4:1 gear in the Transfer Case this will be a great combination , that should have a nice overall crawl ratio...........

Good find!

Being fully synchronized was important to me, I've been in a few spots that being able to shift into first while moving made the difference. About as rare as the 5.11-1 is a 6.32-1 T19, but the 5.11-1 fits what I do perfectly. I'm pretty excited to get this all together, but work commitments wont let that happen until early Sept. At least the Transmission and Transfer Case are ready to install when time permits ;)

:)

The 5.11 is a good gear , more street-able to drive if you want to use Low gear at a dead stop..........I have only seen 2 of the 6.32 T-19's only came in the 450 4-wheel drive as an option, in fact one was mine but the gear sets if you broke one are next to impossible to find so I sold it to a guy that already had one for a spare......the T-18 6.32 are Ok if you just pay attention to driving and pick the right gear..........even gears for the T-18 's are starting to dry up.
