T19 Transmission Upgrade has begun
I'm surprised there isn't a tach. App available for a smart phone.

I rarely use my tach. But when I do .... wait a minute I use my tach all the time. The CJ speedometer has been iffy at best, so using my GPS for speed I know the RPMs' for various speeds ..45, 50, 65 This helps keep track of my speed/speedometer. I like it. It's alsom helpfull for checking idle speeds. You probably know all that, the point is a tach. is far handier than I expected and well worth the money spent.

Well, I've put just shy of 500 miles on since the swap and all seems well. The Transmission shifts great, Transfer Case is amazing off road and aside from the clacking noise going around corners the Aussie locker works very well too. Driving differences between transmissions is huge. On paper I'm only turning 2100+/- at 65mph but it sounds like the engine is screaming compared to 65 with the T-5 , and the split between 3rd and 4th on the T19 is huge. So much so that if I'm on a steep grade I have to stay in 3rd until the road flattens out some. I kinda knew before doing this swap these conditions were likely, and will only get better/worse when the next set of shoes(32's) go on. I might have to start saving for a gear upgrade  Still have a couple loose ends to do before trip, but all is looking good!

Thanks for this update. I had my SM420 on my list of things to sell for the Scrambler fund. One Im looking at has the SR4 and a SM420/Dana 300 swap isnt a bad idea for my plans from what youve experienced.

Pete, I would think the sm420 would make a great swap with its 7+/1 first gear  Unless your wheeling in a bunch of rocks all the time you could get away with leaving the Transfer Case stock too

Thanks for that, coming up with the right tire and gear combo can be a tough choice as mine is a bit low for the freeway. For my tach I just use the one on my volt/ohm meter.

:)
Unfortunately you almost have to gear that for where you spend the most time and let the other ratio's / rpm's fall where they may!

If it's freeway time then gear it so your motor is happy in High gear or OD.

:D:D:D:D

Tarry, when I bought the 4:10s, I still had a 5 speed, it was long before anybody came out with those 4 to 1 Transfer Case gears. I even have the old style Detroit Locker, the one that bangs and sounds like I just broke an axle. I believe that the excessive clearances the the DL has shortened the life of the 5 speed tranny. Then I found a great deal on a brand new T-18 .
