Any tach's out there that will fit in the factory tach hole in the dash with little or no modification?

Would that be factory wiring where I would have to splice into it for an HEI ?

it wires the same way an aftermarket tach does, red = switched +, black = ground, white = backlight, green = signal wire from the hei dist or coil, what ever setup you are going to use.

99% of the time or better the wiring Cheep posted is correct - please check the instructions for your particular tach to be sure... :)

No it wires differently but easy to do. I had to switch out my tach due to it was a 6cyl. and I put in a v8. I also went with the one shown.
My stock one only had 2 large wires on the back,1 red and 1 red/white. I cut them off the tach and had to slice them together to get the engine to run. The replacement tach has the standard wire hookup described earlier. You will have to run a wire from your HEI to the signal wire on the new tach. Everything else you can get from under the dash. The new one has a selector switch on the back to set for your application such as 4,6,8 cylinder. I also have HEI and mine is a 1983 but should be the same.

How is the factory tach mounted to the dash? Unscrew the chrome trim ring?

i had the after market tach. it's just not the same. i went back to the oem tach.
and figured out how to make it work with a 4.0l efi. i would do the same with what your doing as well. good luck.

Mine had a white cup looking thing on the back with a philips head screw in the center.
