tailgate/spare mount

tailgate/spare mount
My 73 had a side mount and I replaced it with a period correct frame/bumper mount for all the reasons stated above. Its been on for 4 years now and couldn't be happier.

When I see it with my own eyes I'm NOT "the type of guy who regurgitates". But as I consider this more, the CJ's with troubles were those without roll bars. Some will argue the effectiveness of the roll bar, buy it does add strength to the rear end and sides of a tub.

How does it open for the tailgate? Looks very nice.

How do you drive with a basket ball backboard attached to your jeep? ...... I laugh and laugh ... did you see how I did that, a basketball back board .... Ohh man I make me so happy ......

It is really a personal choice on where to place your spare. There is alot of good reasons for either voiced here.
In my case I made two lockable gas can holders and mounted them on the tailgate. My 69 has 1/4 inch steel body armor on the sides and rear. I will probably mount my spare on the passenger side. My tires sit out a little on CJ7 axles so if my spare hits a tree 9 out of 10 my tire would on most likely hit also.

My 80' CJ5 has the same tailgate and factory swing out tire holder, as my 79' CJ7 . I have driven both with a 285/75/16 as a spare. No rattles with either one! My 70' CJ5 had a fiberglass tub without the tailgate. I missed not having one. It was a pain to always undue the back soft top window zippers to get in the back of the Jeep to any of my tools or recovery equipment. Did not help any that the Jeep was lifted. And my Beard suspension seats did not tip back!
