Tailgates

I am in the market for a CJ5 with the v6, and am going to look at a 66 this weekend. The seller says it does not have a tailgate but it is an origional steel body. What were the options on these vehicles without or with and the difference in tailgates through the entire cj run production, CJ5 or CJ7 .

Don't know how much help I will be.The M38A1 military CJ5 tub had no tailgate.I owned one.The V6 years 1966-1971 I am not sure.I haven't seen one without a tailgate but that doesn't mean much.Could be a 1972 or later CJ5 Renegade tub.They also don't have tailgates.A little detective work may be in order. good luck. 66 has a standard tailgate.........I believe with no markings on it ( earlier had Willys later had Jeep)

If the non tailgate thing was a deal breaker you can cut out the opening and weld in the tailgate surround. parts are available from classic enterprises. actually it would probably take drilling out spot welds and some trimming with a cut-off wheel to get it ready to accept the tailgate frame.I think that a non 1966 tub would decrease value substantially ,especially if it were military.Later tub will have rear fuel tank,hanging pedals,different Transmission covers,etc. Take pictures when you go to look.
