The perfect tire.

The perfect tire.
When I was growing up everybody had summer tires and winter tires. Each fall and spring we would change'em out. The tricky part was doing it before the first snow. Then along came radial tires, supposedly winter tires would never be needed again. Since I've been in the desert for 30 some years I don't really know, do people still do the winter/summer tire thing?

Not really in Indiana anyway. Those further north/northeast may differ. However, even here in Indiana that was the case 30 or 40 years ago.

The BFG/AT is more than a fair mud tire.
It does carry a DOT 'mud/snow' rating. ;)
Very good points there, in your post HH. :notworthy:

I've been running BFG/MS but thinking about switching over to the ATs. I need to decide real soon

How did you fair with the tornadoes and such?

I think I would always defer to an AT if I wasn't sure and had to make a decision. I don't think many of us have either gotten somewhere or NOT gotten somewhere because of a tire alone. It's not impossible, but not completely likely either. I've gone places with both that I thought I couldn't do and I've gotten stuck with both when I didn't think I should have.

I was real lucky compared to some people in the area. I'm out of a job for a couple of days until some repairs can be made to roofs, electricity, gas and water line problems and general clean up of the area. Over 200 cars just in the parking lots at work were either damaged or destroyed. Lesser built buildings and houses inside and outside the gates and fences were destroyed in this EF 3 Tornado. Wish I could post some pictures because I have a few good ones in the aftermath on my cellphone. Wish I had thought about shooting some video during the action because I had a pretty good view, especially after a 15' x 25 ' roll up door was blown out. To much adrenaline was flowing at the time and did not cross my mind:eek:

Glad you came out OK.
May I ask where you work?
My wife is from Missouri's tornado alley. I have seen the type of pictures you speak of. That are scary to say the least. :notworthy:

Michoud Assembly Facility. The NASA rocket factory

That building was in the news here.
The one tornado I was in many, many years ago. The part that really stands out in my memory of it, was just how LOUD it was. Kinda like a C-5 jet at 'military' power on take off.

Yes load and noisy, but not the freight train most people describe. Maybe that is because I didn't hear the horn or the crossing bells

A tire I have not seen mentioned here is the Goodyear MT/R-K. I have those in 35x12.50x15 on my 77. Traction on rocks, loose shale, gravel, caliche, etc. has been amazing. Pretty quiet on the highway, and ride/handling is very good at highway speeds. Only have about 5000 miles on them so cant really speak to wear or mileage issues, but so far no signs of early or abnormal wear. What little I have driven in wet conditions they seem to work okay, but have not tried them in a heavy downpour. Mud traction is acceptable but not outstanding. Of course, our mud here is a very sticky clay that no tires really work very well in so.....

I like the way they wrap the tread to about middle of the sidewall.

Those Goodyears look good!

Is the Goodyear MT/R with Kevlar the perfect tire? Or about as close as it can get?

I run 37" Goodyear MT/R with Kevlar. I find they work great on dry rock, loose gravel and such. I find them quiet on-road with good durability. However, they absolutely suck in slick mud.

I am a huge fan of the way BFG ATs look, feel, sound and handle. The price tag was to much on my newest CJ since it is just a fun weekend driver. I went with Cooper Discoverer AT3s this time. They look great, great tread, fairly quiet and about $500 cheaper then the BFG equivalent at 33x12.50x15. Currently the best tire for the money in my opinion.

I am also in need of tires and have been looking at DC Fun Country, has anyone used them before?
I also see that MT's Deegan 38 will have a full A/T tire coming out.
