I think I'd be curious as to what all is inside regardless of the crank. Perhaps it is the late model crank and it was "too much" for him because it idled rougher than a late 70's crank would. Pistons? Head work? Rods? There could be a lot lurking in there, or it could be junk.

He swapped it out for a reason, either it's what you wish for or its some hybrid stroker or it's just a nice set of rocker arms. You don't have too much in it. Worst case your down $AMC 150 ($400 minus used rockers) and an ounce of misplaced pride. Who here hasn't done that? Anyone who hasn't is lying

Let us know... I'm curious.

I'd bet since they have roller rockers that there is somesort of upgraded cam in there too. He claimed it to be a comp cam and comp lifters, I dont build engines but I'd imagine that those parts have some sort of Identification stamped into them and have some sort of value second hand if they are in good condition.

Its a mystery buy for sure. That is why the machine shop is taking the head and pan off. See if we cant get some sort of idea as to what we are working with. So Ill be a tad more than 400 into with disassembly and measurements from the shop.

im in, go i-6's WOO!

I will find out tonight after work. The anticipation is a little much. I keep telling myself that I am assuming it is not a 4.2 crank so that I won't be dissapointed but in reality I am really keeping my fingers crossed big time and would be sad if it isnt.

If you find yourself sad with just a 4.0 drop it off here. I can fit it in Vickis Laredo somehow. :D

No No No, Not until you buy an FI harness!

Has anyone seen a power/torque curv on one of these? I was talking to an engine builder that told me the motor peeked at 3500-4000RPMs. would like to see what kind of numbers could be expected on the way to that speed.:D

ive stumbled across them on the web's before no idea where now since its not on my priority list but its very flat out to its peak, the strokers actually have to turn more rpm to make their hp over a stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l (odd i know) but they start off with similar torque numbers right off idle. i think that may be why they feel torquier than the v motors is that the v type grows torque with rpm more drastically than the i6.

And the verdict is........ Its a pig in a poke!

Ok so you have a cam upgraded 4.0 for $400? Still not bad.

No actually its worse than that. It IS a stroker. However it wasn't built well and it was run hard. It was bored .060 over and they used the incorrect piston dishes. The cylinder walls were scarred and the core is just unusable. The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l crank and rods are usable and so are the rockers so i can sell those. I dont know if the cam in it has any resale value.

There is no way This engine was running when pulled, there is no way that guy couldnt have known there was something wrong. Its just a wash and goes to show if its too good to be true it probably is.

I seem to remember a while back the guys on Horsepower built a 4.0 Strocker and was able to get almost a 1000 horse on the dyno with it.
Now I'm getting old and the memory is not what it use to be but you may be able to find the build on their web site.

I think I'm confused. Giving up on your engine and completely replacing it seems like over kill. Why not pull the obviously faulty "custom" fuel injection system and replace it with a factory ready drop in that you know will work and work well?

No multiport is a deal breaker for me
