The "Pig in a Poke" Stroker

The "Pig in a Poke" Stroker
Guy - ooops you caught my original post before I changed it. :( I made the rooky mistake of not realizing that there were several posts between my last post and where we are today. With the other posts between I felt that mine would be more like "piling on" than helpful. So you see the change in the general direction between the deleted post and the one that 's there now.

I really wasn't sparing with you, I was just thinking about the elevation changes we all live our driving lives in. Right now my 360 has its stock Motocraft 2150 carb. THe 2150 has a mechanical altitude compensating device on it that seems to work rather well. With that being said I will eventuially have a fuel injected intake. My old mind is still out on the real need for port side injection over throttle body injection. From what I understand port side injection is snappier or responds quicker to the throttle, but is that a good thing for 4 wheeling and old Jeep frames. I've been told that a snappy engine is much harder on a frame than an engine that produces power in a steady, more deliberate manner.

One thing for sure is an injected engine is in my future. I like the idea that there's a computer out there constantly sniffing the air currents to find the very best way to handle the enginse fuel intake.

I agree with IO, Keep after your problem. You are right, it is very likely something small. Ask yourself, what is the difference between the days it is running perfectly and the days it craps out. Your answer might lay in the answer somewhere.

Haha well If efi is in your future, then let me blaze the way and figure out this tpi problem. Maybe once I iron it out I can make you one!

Um. I dont know about snappier really being the way I would describe it. It just runs smoother if done right. When I started driving my Fuel injected AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /40 hybrid on my old CJ (Why the Hell did I sell it!!!!) the difference was night and day. It ran so much smoother and better that for the first few days I kept having little panic attacks as I approached lights or stops signs because I kept thinking that the engine died on me.

If I can figure this TPI out and move on to fine tuning it it should run like a champ. You just can't beat FI in my mind. Maybe if I could build and tune a carb I would think differently but every attempt i have made at that has failed miserably.

I appreciate your offer to help me on my way with the TPI. Unfortunately I need an approved system to get around the emissions laws here in Arizona, more specifically the populated cities or areas around Phoenix and Tucson.

if that is the case then I would say Port injection for your v8 is not in your future the only MPFI kit I know of is the edelbrock one which sells for around 3k.

TBI kits are available but if you buy new they range from 1500ish maybe you can find a kit used but then I dont know how that would work with emissions.

Yeah, I've been looking, some are certified, most aren't. One is labled as California legal, it seems like that should be legal here in Arizona. Right now my 360 and stock carb are running well enough so I really can't complain.

Is Az that anal about this?? In Texas we have to pass untill we are 25 years old and then they don't test us. I know the land of fruits and nuts has every body by the yabos but I thought they were a singular PITA.:D

The cut off for emissions is 1975. If I had a '74 they wouldn't open the hood. There are a few ways around it, but I'd need a historic plate and not be able to drive the CJ to work or in the Tucson Valley. A few years ago there was an inspection of our down town State Parking Garage, where I park, where the authorities checked for historic or exempt lisence plates. Quite a few were found and the garage was fined heavily. Why the drivers didn't get sited I don't know. This is one of the main reasons I got the 360. The AMC 304 was stripped of all emissions equipement and the 360 was complete. It would have cost more to get the equipment than it cost for the engine upgrade. ..... 360 = $550 delivered ..... sold old engine on craigslist for $450 ..... $100 for a newly rebuilt engine from an '82 Wagoneer, not a bad trade. The 360 passed emissions with plenty of room to spare and not a second look during the visual inspection.

IO -

Which inspection are you referring to? In SAT we only have to pass a safety inspection no matter the age of the vehicle but that is it. I have to get over there this month to get mine done. Nervous as usual since mine really doesn't meet;
9. Exhaust System
10. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models).

What can I say, SAT is still the sticks? In Dallas Co we get the probe in the tailpipe until we are at least 25 years old. I have a place in Fannin Co. so I can get a safety inspection if I register it there. check the lights and brakes and that will be $XX thank you sir, have a nice day. I agree it is kind of hard to pass emissions with a header and no EGR,air pump, wrong carb, no TAC, the list goes on and on.:D Although I think there is a good possibility I could comply with the standards with out the hardware.

Yes, Hallelujah!! :chug:

'Ain't got no Catalytic Converter.'

-What's a Cadillac Converter, and will it help my resale value?

Listed the rocker for 275 plus shipping with the push rods, lifters and valve cover spacer and it had a bid in under 2 hours so I guess I will get a little bit of my money back.

Im hoping to get about AMC 150 for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l crank and rods.
