I would like to start a thread on projects that just get out of hand. I thought of this because, although I have a list of need-to's about a page long, I got involved with a project that started with a gift from a friend. It was free, wasn't it! I am sure this happens to every one but I am totally amazed at how things just kept adding up!
It started when My girl friend bought a new car, she didn't really need one , she just wanted one. She had a silver Pontiac, she traded it for a red Pontiac. I'm not going to try to explain this part so lets move on. She had put a very nice radio in the silver Pontiac, I Pod compatible CD player ready for XM radio, it is a beauty. So she had the dealer pull it out and put the OEM radio back in.
Then things started to get out of control. She gave it to me, it seemed like a nice thing to do, I was grateful. OK so now I decide to put it in the CJ but the CJ never had stereo at least not without some kind of horrendous speaker boxes in the back and the rain and the sun and everything. It would be great to have two speakers in the dash but it only has a mount for one 5 1/4 inch speaker. How do I mount another speaker in the dash with out looking like a hatchet job. I am just OCD enough that things like that bother me , especially if I have to look at them a lot.
The solution appears like magic while surfing the wilds of E Bay I find a polished stainless steel ( OOOOH Shiney) dash and it has two speaker mounts!! Perfect!!
But wait!! this dash has a couple of extra holes. One is 2 7/8 inch for a factory tachometer ( never saw one of those) and the other is 2 5/8 inch for a factory clock. I need a clock in my CJ like a submarine needs a screen door. By now I am trapped by my Karma and following My tao and there is no turning back ( I already ordered it) , Now lady luck steps in again and CL turns up a factory Tach from a 60 something CJ and its about 5 miles away from the house. cool! Now for the other hole we need a gauge, one of my favorites it the vacuum gauge, it can actually help with diagnostics and it moves a lot so it looks like it's doing something. Now all that is left to do is figure a way to cut a square hole in 16 gauge stainless steel so I can put the radio in the dash and I am set. Maybe. and so far the free radio has only cost me about $300.
And in the mean time I still have wheel bearings and brakes and Universal joints and on and on and on...
I think this makes a great story and goes to prove that 'All roads lead to another road". I bet yall have one too.
