I would like to start a thread on projects that just get out of hand. I thought of this because, although I have a list of need-to's about a page long, I got involved with a project that started with a gift from a friend. It was free, wasn't it! I am sure this happens to every one but I am totally amazed at how things just kept adding up!

It started when My girl friend bought a new car, she didn't really need one , she just wanted one. She had a silver Pontiac, she traded it for a red Pontiac. I'm not going to try to explain this part so lets move on. She had put a very nice radio in the silver Pontiac, I Pod compatible CD player ready for XM radio, it is a beauty. So she had the dealer pull it out and put the OEM radio back in.
Then things started to get out of control. She gave it to me, it seemed like a nice thing to do, I was grateful. OK so now I decide to put it in the CJ but the CJ never had stereo at least not without some kind of horrendous speaker boxes in the back and the rain and the sun and everything. It would be great to have two speakers in the dash but it only has a mount for one 5 1/4 inch speaker. How do I mount another speaker in the dash with out looking like a hatchet job. I am just OCD enough that things like that bother me , especially if I have to look at them a lot.
The solution appears like magic while surfing the wilds of E Bay I find a polished stainless steel ( OOOOH Shiney) dash and it has two speaker mounts!! Perfect!!
But wait!! this dash has a couple of extra holes. One is 2 7/8 inch for a factory tachometer ( never saw one of those) and the other is 2 5/8 inch for a factory clock. I need a clock in my CJ like a submarine needs a screen door. By now I am trapped by my Karma and following My tao and there is no turning back ( I already ordered it) , Now lady luck steps in again and CL turns up a factory Tach from a 60 something CJ and its about 5 miles away from the house. cool! Now for the other hole we need a gauge, one of my favorites it the vacuum gauge, it can actually help with diagnostics and it moves a lot so it looks like it's doing something. Now all that is left to do is figure a way to cut a square hole in 16 gauge stainless steel so I can put the radio in the dash and I am set. Maybe. and so far the free radio has only cost me about $300.

And in the mean time I still have wheel bearings and brakes and Universal joints and on and on and on...

I think this makes a great story and goes to prove that 'All roads lead to another road". I bet yall have one too.

:grinjeep:

I had Bubba.... :D

I dont have a current story. Well, I will have one probably next week. We just bought a 90 something Chevy pickup. Its a clean looking truck. Needs a motor... I will be in the garage shaking my head and laughing my <-BAD WORD-> off throughout this project. Chevys are easy, but damnit if it doesnt become one of 'those' projects. And the minivan, lmao... I just want it to run right.

My simple "change out the engine so I can rebuild it" and still keep the CJ running during this, has turned into a complete dash replacement, total wire job, new exhaust, electric fan install, OBA started...My list just keeps getting longer!

I'm with ya....My little CJ7 was running 4 years ago, but probably needs an engine now, and it probably needs a new windshield frame, and you might want to change the oil in the axles, and some minor fiberglass repair on the fenders from when it ran into a shed, and it's full of rain water......
I bought a rebuilt 360, but my dreams of dropping it in and going on my merry way were shattered! The more I look, the more it needs, I might have slight ocd issues also, but I can't stand doing things half assed. So my story has only begun as well.
BTW, I was looking at the same dash on ebay! :D

and I forgot the speakers!! thats another $100 and they require some adapting , Tri axial speaker cones arn't flush with the face of the speaker. so I had to fab a 11/16 inch spacer to put between the speaker and the dash. Thats right 11/16, there is just enough room behind the dash for the speaker to fit on the drivers side.
The dash is way cool, they did an excelant job cutting and reinforcing it.
Never use chrome if you can have stainless. chrome is a temperary thing and high maintainance, stainless is forever.:)

The house I bought to move my family into, because it was dirt cheap.

If I buy a piece-O-:dung: house, will you come over and fix it up for me?

For me it was the purchase of my Jeep, it has been out of hand since the day I brought it home and I see no light at the end of the tunnel, it's an addiction always thinking about waht can be done next what kind of mods, and then every free moment is spent tinkering on it, LOL

Your right , I have no vision for that sort of thing. Obviously you do , very nice. How many months of her constantly nagging did it take? :D

Good job!!
Women always want things like windows and walls, go figure.

My latest rebuild got out of hand...

I'm so far behind it's not funny! At least the weather is cooling off again so I can work without loosing 5 lbs of water (sweat)!

lol I think every jeep gets out of hand. It seems it never ends or I just want to much Idon't know. :D

Mine has gotten out of hand in the way of tools! I thought the cheap part was taking the cj apart! It seems like everytime I go to remove something, I need a different tool. Started with the sawsal/grinder, then welder, then air compressor/neumatic tools, engine hoist, engine stand, ect... and the list goes on! My garage is full of fun new toys now!

CW, you think you have it bad. I made the mistake of giving my wife a blank sheet of paper and telling her I'll build it.
